Blackmist , to unitedkingdom in Thames Water says it needs 59% bill rise to survive

Guess they’ll die. What a shame.

That’s what happens when you fail to maintain things for 30+ years, syphon off all the money for shareholders, and then cry poverty when the government decides that just flushing everyone’s shit into the river isn’t an acceptable way to deal with it.

Tighten the rules further and nationalise any company that can’t keep up. Should never have been privatised in the first place. I, a fairly normal person, cannot pick and choose which company provides my water like I can with electricity, gas and internet. So what’s the point of having a company run it?

You don’t know the BBC??

HK65 ,

It couldn’t find the Polish national broadcaster either. It’s a tiny bit US centric.

So many American films and TV have the BBC as the token international news. So really not good to not know it. I think it’s probably because its neutrality is seen as the wrong bias…

Did you editorialise the headline?

Extremist settlers rapidly seizing West Bank land

gressen ,

Yes, and why?

FelixCress OP ,

No, I used auto fill. There seems to be different headline on the main page, different headline when you actually click on the article and different when you auto populate which I assume is the original one. It looks like it has been changed multiple times.

jonne , (edited )

Yeah, the BBC has been caught writing some headlines that minimise Israel’s role in the conflict. They’ve probably changed it after pushback.

FuglyDuck ,
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

So like, even the link is the headline you gave in the post. You click it and you even see it on the page before it updates to “extremist”.

steventhedev ,

Headlines are sampled randomly for the first few hours of an article going live to measure exposure. The headline that gets the most clicks wins.

There are a lot of sites that do this.

It causes headaches when it comes to social. Usually the original headline is preserved in the url, but sometimes they’ll use a unique id and then include the editorialized headline option so they can track which headline you clicked on.

Also editorial decisions on wording based on pushback, legal threats, etc.

geneva_convenience ,

BBC edited it and removed Israel as culprit from the headline to make it look as if it this is some extremist fringe sect. They do not want people to know this is official Israeli state policy.

God I wonder why Palestinians are so upset. Oh wait:

Last October, Palestinian grandmother Ayesha Shtayyeh says a man pointed a gun at her head and told her to leave the place she had called home for 50 years.

I have literally no sympathy for these settlers. I hope they have a brutal, agonizing, slow, and humiliating death.

0x0 , to news in Israeli outpost settlers rapidly seizing West Bank land

John Oliver had a piece recently about it. Quite enlightening.

Tja , to news in Israeli outpost settlers rapidly seizing West Bank land

It’s not the wilderness, why are they called settlers? English already has a word for what they are doing, even multiple: invaders, occupiers, tresspasers…

davepleasebehave , (edited )

settlers also has other connotations which is probably why is was chosen.

to settle something = agree

to settle down = calm and mature

to settle for something = compromise

to settle a dispute = legal and fair

None of which is remotely close to what these people are doing when they steal.

some_guy ,

Thieves.

lolcatnip ,

And often murderers, too.

prole , to world in Israeli outpost settlers rapidly seizing West Bank land

Oh ok never mind guys, these are just “settlers,” and all they’re doing is “seizing land.” Nothing to be concerned about. It’s not like people have been living on that land for generations or anything…

These people are fucking terrorists, let’s stop sugar coating it.

some_guy , to news in Israeli outpost settlers rapidly seizing West Bank land

I think we should treat them as an occupying force and intervene, but what do I know.

li10 , to unitedkingdom in Term-time holiday fine rise won't stop us, say parents

Fair enough imo, what’s a kid going to remember, 10 days of school where they spent most their time pissing about, or a family holiday.

I don’t know the ins and outs, but I think there should be a threshold of like 10 days a year where it’s okay, as long as the kid has good attendance besides that and it’s not around exam time.

It’s punching down from the government as it’s a working class issue. Middle class can afford the peak holiday rates, poorer families can’t.

thehatfox OP ,
@thehatfox@lemmy.world avatar

Having a holiday threshold sounds like a good idea. Allow a set amount of days and fine beyond that to discourage excessive absence.

So long as it’s not during exams or something I can’t see the harm in allowing a 1-2 week holiday a year. It would be much fairer and more flexible for families, and less complicated than things like different areas having staggered term dates
