ThirdWorldOrder , to news in Brazil police raids leave at least 43 people dead

Brazil police do not fuck around. Wonder if they were all off duty

acockworkorange ,

There’s widespread corruption in the organization. Think the mafia, but with less pizzazz. It could be well “file erasure”, competition elimination, or just plain vengeance behind all this.

The federal police (think FBI) do good work in general, but they’re a much smaller force.

FigMcLargeHuge , to worldnews in Voyager 2: Nasa loses contact with record-breaking probe after sending wrong command

A little disappointed in BBC with the clickbait title there… All is not lost as the headline implies, per the article:

While fuller communication is not yet established, Voyager 2 is programmed to reset its orientation multiple times each year to keep its antenna pointing at Earth. The next reset is due on 15 October, which Nasa says “should enable communication to resume”.

Frustrating that they make it sound like this is a big deal.

@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

They did update the title later to “Voyager 2: Nasa picks up ‘heartbeat’ signal after sending wrong command”, I’m using original title they used when publishing the article.

FigMcLargeHuge ,

It’s pretty frustrating that the news lately just goes out of their way to make things look bleak. Like that CNN story about Saturn’s rings “disappearing”. They mentioned that “future astronomers might not get the chance to view Saturn’s rings.” and went on about how they were disappearing. At the very end of the article was the estimate of the timeline, and it was 100 million years. Give me a fucking break. These fucking news outlets with their clickbait bullshit titles just irritates me. I get you were just posting what was there. My frustration is just at the news outlets themselves.

Whats the ink made out of? Because I’d imagine they’re adding more carcinogens considering you light that on fire. Which is kinda funny to me.

Are all filters white in Canada? I thought those were the tips. Just had to zoom in to see it clear on mobile.

No idea, not a Canadian myself, but filters have variary of colors where I live depending on the brand.

This is big news. It will have repercussions on the way big pension funds invest their money, which in turn will affect interest rates, share prices, etc. In the long run, this is definitely going to have real-world repercussions, even if it’s hard to see exactly what right now.

I get what you mean, but I don’t think we should defederate with them. You must realise that this makes Mastodon more mainstream, which in the long term is a good thing.

I'm pretty surprised about this but there's still a little cynical part of me that isn't

Jimmycrackcrack , to worldnews in Canada puts cancer warnings directly on cigarettes

Wow is this new over there? Here in Australia we have strongly worded warnings about cancer and death along with photographs of fucked up looking feet from associated illnesses and people dying in hospital beds with breathing masks and tubes everywhere and fucked up looking lungs from autopsies of smokers.

BenGFHC ,

I think they're saying they will put the warnings on individual cigarettes now. Not just the box

Exadyne ,

Those sorts of warnings / graphic images are already present on the cigarette packaging in Canada. What’s new is that now the warnings will also be printed directly on each individual cigarette!

Jimmycrackcrack ,

Serves me right for commenting something based on the title and not reading the link linked article. It’s even right there in the thumbnail

rumbleran ,

And every smoker already knows that cigarettes have lots of negative health effects but still smoke anyways because they like it and are willing to gamble. So I wonder what’s the point in this?

Looks as though they’ve started receiving limited signals – a “heartbeat” from the probe. And even if full communications aren’t re-established in the immediate term, it seems Voyager 2 automatically repositions its antenna towards Earth every few months – next one due is in October. Pretty slick for such an old probe.
