For an AI generator to make convincing photos of CSAM, wouldn’t it have had to have access to real CSAM to “learn” how to make it?

Wouldn’t the creators of the generator then have to have had access to it / download it or whatever they do when they feed material to the algorithm?

drislands ,

Not necessarily. I’m only speculating, which I don’t relish, but I imagine the service isn’t explicitly designed with CSAM as the intended result – if I’m reading it right, it’s billed as “upload picture of clothed person X and received ‘naked’ picture of same person”, and is almost certainly trained on appropriately-aged pornographic material.

I don’t know the inner workings of technology like this, and I certainly don’t intend to critique the images talked about in this article, but the resulting picture doesn’t have to be an accurate representation of a minor’s body to be distressing to the people involved.

lud ,

Nah, I don’t think so. I haven’t tried and I won’t try, but these images are probably just made with inpainting with generic nsfw prompts.

If the AI was trained on enough nudity it would probably just scale it down to child size or whatever.

I can’t imagine there must be a huge difference in appearance.

I am just guessing though.

I've said for the longest time, the world needs wiping. A hard reset.

Technology comes to the masses and shit like this is some people's first thought? Constantly figuring out how to better kill each other, humiliate, bully. It blows my mind, even at the old old age of 34 how utterly deprived people can be.

Tell a family member you love them today, give them a hug - create your own net positive.

This is the more reasonable and realistic approach, I'm just not even sure how that'd come about. Although I feel education is an important factor from a young age on the do's and don'ts - tools? Maybe need to be developed that somehow doesn't intrude on the right to privacy.

It's concerning, after reading this this morning then speaking to some of the lads about it, me Mrs - even with me Mum when I was out for a walk with her.. It's leaving people feel hella vulnerable. Nothing to stop anyone right now taking a pic of any one us and slapping it on some weird shit, some incriminating shit, racial hatred shit. Anything.

It's ticking time bomb imo

I admire your positive thinking, but it may also provide plausible deniability for legitimate CSAM, by your own logic. Either way, I see this being used to bully, blackmail, or worse. It’s not that we are going to stop AI development, nor that we should. Perhaps as it improves (remember, right now it’s the worst it will ever be), we can teach AI to recognize when it may be used for purposes like creating realistic CSAM or other such material, and have it log or report such uses.

I honestly don’t know the solution, but I don’t see the world ever getting “ho-hum, it’s all fake anyway” about minor involved pornography.

    cactusupyourbutt ,

it will do neither. i generated pictures can usually be identified by eye alone, and some companies are starting to add an invisible watermark to their output

    CeruleanRuin ,

But the overall impact of not being able to trust any image will not be positive. We already have widespread distrust of everything in the media that leads to people forming cults around their beliefs and strong personalities that are immune to facts. That will only get worse as photos and videos can no longer be trusted as evidence of anything real.

Conservatism is inappropriate in a modern civilization. If conservatives aren’t gleefully endangering everyone around them during a deadly pandemic, they are mocking, assaulting or murdering those who object.

There is no such thing as a “good conservative”. Conservatism is a plague and should be outlawed entirely.

    kandoh ,

    Conservatives before the pandemic:

Socialized medicine is bad, you get what you pay for!

    Conservatives after the pandemic:

You can’t trust the pharmaceutical industry, they just want to make profits!

    explodicle ,

The main reason to not outlaw it is that conservatives are currently in charge of the laws, and will redefine “conservative” to mean “not fascist”.

Naw, I was too. Haven't been for a year or two, but I've only ever subscribed to them for the shipping. Barely used their streaming when I did cause, also, yarr 🏴‍☠️

    Hyperreality ,

Imagine for a second you were a paid member of a gym, but decided to do most of your exercise outside the gym you just paid for.

That's most streaming platforms for a large amount of people. They're so inconvenient that people will pay for them, and still not use the service they paid for.

A damning indictment of modern day streaming platforms tbh.

    MxM111 ,

I am with you. Their streaming service was always subpar to competitors. In fact, I watched only one series there -the expanse, and that’s it.

    drlecompte ,

Paper Girls is pretty good too.

    aeternum ,

I pay $0 for my streaming service, and it has everything i want on it. Yaaaaarrrrrr

    rynzcycle ,

God forgive me, I'm going defend Prime. I always thought that because Prime was also required for faster shipping, they were willing to explore artistic shows that something like Netflix wouldn't touch these days. People likely aren't subscribing or cancelling because of the video offer, so they have more freedom to greenlight interesting concepts.

Prime shows like Solos and Tales from the Loop probably aren't great for getting new subscribers, but they're absolutely wonderful, especially compared to season 47 of [generic low-budget comedy baking reality show]. Shows like The Expanse, Mr Robot, Homecoming are all solid and Prime seems far less likely to cancel shows before they end properly.

    VentraSqwal ,

I’m going to add onto that The Boys and Invincible. Ya I agree that it’s probably one of the better ones.

    bermuda ,

I loved what the grand tour was able to accomplish on prime that they simply couldn’t on BBC with top gear. The early seasons are wonky with weird formatting, but when they started focusing more on specials in the later seasons (seamen, eurocrash, the Mongolian special, a massive hunt) have been some of the best top gear content since like top gear season 7

    agressivelyPassive ,

I’m almost impressed by how bad their UI is. It’s like they didn’t even try to create something useful, but simply shoehorned it into the regular Amazon codebase.

The only service with worse UI is Sky, and if Sky is your benchmark, than you’re done.

    MxM111 ,

I so much agree. I would never go to Amazon service to buy new movies (for streaming). It is not easy to see what is in your library and sort/search it.

    HubertManne ,

the music is a more significant boost to the shipping than the video.

    Fester ,

I think we had Prime before streaming even started, so that was like a bonus.

But lately we hardly use it. The site is so janky and bloated with trash, I’d rather pay shipping and buy directly from a brand website or a normal retailer. Most have free shipping nowadays anyway.

I just bought an Apple USB wall adapter from Amazon because Best Buy was out of them. I spent like 20 minutes inspecting it and the package and watching videos about how to make sure it isn’t counterfeit. Buying a $20 thing shouldn’t be a stressful ordeal.

    CrabAndBroom ,

We just write down things we need to get from Amazon, then wait until they give us another free trial month of Prime and do it all at once lol.
