They’ve grown up online. So why are our kids not better at detecting misinformation?::Recent studies have shown teens are more susceptible than adults. It’s a problem researchers, teachers and parents are only beginning to understand.

Have you talked to a parent or child recently about current grade school? Tech literacy education has basically vanished, at least in US public schools. They pretty much expect kids to have figured out tech literacy in their own time, since computers and smartphones are so ubiquitous now.

I, too, had classes like what you described when I was in grade school, in addition to typing and Microsoft Office classes. The school I went to doesn’t have any of that anymore, just a couple carts full of Chromebooks that the students share for writing papers.

Again, I don’t think your experiences from 20 years ago are relevant to the current day. With how far smartphones have come, it’s actually very common for families to not own a single laptop or desktop computer. Modern children game on phones/tablets and consoles/handhelds way more than they do on computers. For many, school is really the only place they have access to a computer.

The above isn’t just relevant to typing - young kids are becoming increasingly ignorant of concepts that smartphones abstract away, e.g. filesystems

If that were true, nobody would be literate or be able to do basic arithmetic…

Google Docs is free and has basically become the standard word processor for the “unsophisticated users” you’re worried about. It essentially comes with your OS because you only need a browser to use it.

I think your kid and his children will survive.

Population collapse almost wiped out human ancestors, say scientists (www.theguardian.com)

The decline appears to coincide with significant changes in global climate that turned glaciations into long-term events, a decrease in sea surface temperatures, and a possible long period of drought in Africa and Eurasia. The team behind the work said the time window also coincides with a relatively empty period on the fossil...

I like how one day the news gives us a couple articles about population declines in a couple East Asian countries and the next they’re talking about the human race going extinct.

I mean I know this is painfully pedantic but even simply sorting by new is algorithmic

I’m aware. my comment was more for the folks who don’t know that an algorithm is simply a set of steps to achieve something specific

The family iPad isn’t the issue

idk, i think you’re too quick to dismiss this as a real issue. i don’t disagree that overworked parents are a major factor, but going to restaurants, airports, and other places where parents are motivated to placate their children, you can’t help but notice the amount of ipad parenting going on. sure, an hour here and there is harmless, but parents and kids both get addicted to the effectiveness and it easily becomes more than that

and that’s perfectly fine? As a Zelda fan, the wait for TOTK was absofuckinglutely worth it

I swear to god, I don’t know how anyone could be impatient about this. Have you played every other video game that’s been released during the ~50 yr history of video games? No? Ok, go play one of those or touch some goddamn grass

to expand your point, the sole job of an LLM is to, when given a sequence of words (e.g. half a sentence), predict what the next several words should be. the model has no concept of what English words mean, so instead it makes this prediction based on statistics that were derived from basically reading through hundreds of thousands of English sentences

TL;DR LLMs don’t understand languages, they’ve just memorized statistics about them

How has it played out in other states that have legalized it?

its still a mess but for the most part, businesses won’t test for weed unless they have federal clients or another office in a non-legal state

Is there anything Jackett does that can’t be manually installed to qBittorrent as a search plugin? I ask because Jackett DOES NOT work for me. Trust me, I’ve tried everything even with tech support. What are some things that can be done with blank dvds, nowadays?

So my family has a few containers of unused blank dvds that are just lying around collecting dust. i know dvds are almost useless because of streaming, but can they still be used. Theses dvds can only be written to once and they only have like 3 gb of storage on them, can they still be used?, do they have a use?

turkalino ,
@turkalino@lemmy.yachts avatar

1080p movies can be encoded down to < 3 GB

kinda nice to just pop a disc in the bluray player and know that you won’t be shown ads, recommendations for the latest capeshit, or be upsold to the next tier… just the movie and nothing else

I asked it to write a bash script which simply read a couple inputs using readline and then ran a couple commands inside an if/else

It declared a variable that it never used. I pointed out the mistake and asked to remove the line. It simply renamed the variable.

I’d trust an unpaid intern more
