This week’s parsha is in so many ways about what it is for humans to unmask & learn about themselves.

Lekh Lekha is about going into yourself on a journey like no other.

For me, reading it reminds me of those understanding that being autistic isn’t a curse. It’s an entirely new paradigm.

People often ask me to define & explain “Unmasking” as there are lots of contradictory definitions & conceptions of it and it can be confusing for those getting started on their path.

Don’t overthink it.

Unmasking is nothing more, and nothing less, than mindfulness for humans.

For many of us, life means constantly navigating meltdowns, shutdowns, and Autistic Burnout.

humans are more isolated than allistics and suffer more loneliness.

This fact is rarely discussed when we are talking about our oppression.

Many of our comrades here are homeless. Autistic humans are at LEAST 12x more likely to be homeless than the general population.

One isn’t radical or revolutionary when entrenching themselves into groupthink.

That’s a form of autistic camouflaging/masking. Denying yourself or simply mimicking others in order to be accepted and/or stay safe.

Unmasking and being true to YOU is radical & revolutionary.

AuDHD humans get less support than needed. This is mainly due to our being socialized from an earlier age and grossly being misdiagnosed and taken care of our entire lives.

Our experience is different.

I've been working on a definition for Autistic Burnout for the past couple of years.

To date, there are a number of definitions and understandings of this most dangerous phenomenon.

To me, Autistic Burnout is a profound and enduring state of exhaustion paired with a partial to total loss of particular abilities resulting from the chronic and relentless denial of our fundamental autistic needs by society and those around us and an overabundance of demands and stimuli without sufficient recovery time.

It is characterized by several interconnected factors, including a continual sense of emotional and sensory overwhelm, a persistent dysregulation of our nervous system, and a profound alienation stemming from both camouflaging, not being heard or understood, and at times, encountering disbelief or even hostile responses to one's autistic experiences.

We can continue to break this down into a bunch of various nuances and we should. There are levels (some say 4, some 5, some 6) and I think all can agree that not all burnouts are the same. I think we can also agree that more humans are in burnout than we may suspect.

More humans live in Autistic Burnout than previously thought.

But it isn't a foregone conclusion that your entire life will be spent in Burnout. Even if it's been decades.

Important to remember that Burnout is caused and sustained by lack of connection to your autistic self and a denial of your autistic needs.

@actuallyautistic

Tantrums purposely manipulate people in order to have desires and preferences met. They are 100% intentional.

Meltdowns of humans are not under our control are the body’s natural reaction to a lack of our needsbeing met. They are 100% non intentional.

There are tens of thousands of humans living in fear right now in both Gaza and Israel.

Different types of fear, to be sure, but fear nonetheless.

As an autistic advocate and activist I teach people, daily, that triggers that dysregulate us may look "small" to an outsider, but that to us it's a much bigger deal.

It saddens me how much of the discourse around Israel-Palestine has totally rejected that there are autistic people actually living out this nightmare.

It hurts me to see so many people absolutely reject the humanity of the other side based on nothing but one's own preference or virtue signaling.

Our autistic comrades are living in a state of extreme dysregulation at the moment in that part of the world. All of whom wish that they can find a moment of peace.

Let's not forget that and let's not silence the voices of our autistic comrades who are Palestinian and Israeli. The ACTUAL events are traumatic enough for anyone, let alone an autistic person. More pain and dysregulation need not be added by people who use their lives as an activity to talk about.

But it doesn’t mean you aren’t disabled either. You are.

But it doesn’t mean you can’t believe in superpowers. You can.

But you CAN believe that life is incredibly hard without help too.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, it’s much appreciated.

Everything I post on the Fediverse is as part of the autistic community. The only thing that may be construed as a promotion would be my workshops, and even these, I’d argue are not, as they are pay as you can, even free. Every single one of my discussion circles and support groups are entirely free for all.

I never promote my personal coaching sessions on this platform, even though I do not believe doing such is a problem.

I am here fully and solely as a member of the community. As I have said perhaps 50+ times over the past year, my questions and posts are in no way any different than any one else’s. The opposite, in fact, the size of my platform actually makes them that much more seen. Also, it’s important to note, again, that the majority of the questions are not MINE, but questions that the community ASKS ME to ask, as a way of getting others to be seen.
