This and other examples of semantic and perceptual motivations suggest that language is not in fact autonomous from the rest of human cognition. Unfortunately, the autonomy claims that justify the formalist school’s approach have been elevated to the status of doctrine. Rather than being seen as a set of simplifying assumptions that are intended to help tame a complex system, they are now taken as truths about the nature of language. Linguists routinely argue (e.g., Bickerton 1981, 1984) that language is a completely self-contained system, with genetically preprogrammed modules that interact with each other and other cognitive processes only through well-defined interfaces. The years of work based on assuming the autonomy of language and its components have not been wasted; our understanding of many complicated linguistic structures has advanced a great deal. But it is time to take the evidence seriously and to build theories that treat the complex interconnections of language, perception, and cognition.

Throughout Western intellectual history, there has been a conviction that it is possible to find the necessary and sufficient conditions for any category. A square is a two-dimensional object with four sides of equal length and four right angles. Nothing lacking these properties can be a square and anything having those properties is defi- nitely a square. Ludwig Wittgenstein, in his Philosophical
Investigations, brought the whole necessity-and-sufficiency enterprise crashing to earth in the West. Wittgenstein argued to the satisfaction (or rather, dismay) of even the most analytic of Western philosophers that establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for any complex or interesting category, such as a "game" or a "government" or an "illness," was never going to be possible. A thing can be a game even if it is not fun, even if played alone, even if its chief goal is to make money. A thing is not necessarily a game even if it is fun or is a nonproductive activity engag- ing several people in pleasurable interaction. Wittgen- stein's sermon would never have been needed in the East. The pronouncement that complex categories cannot always be defined by necessary and sufficient conditions would scarcely have been met with surprise.

@koen_hufkens @academicchatter one of my theories has been that autistics and schizophrenics have been quite aware that such tools do this: their emergence is a means to block out those who have weaponized religious, economic, and political voices co-opted by those outside their generational peer group. it's time to start thinking at the level of philosophical war. the artilect war went online more than a decade ago. wars happen.

@cbontenbal @philosophy atheism can be looked at from various of analytical lenses. to the linguistic, it is a seven letter diachronic term composed of morphemes, to the theologian or philosopher it is a stance about some arguments idealized into propositional or modal logic, to the anthropologist, it is a designation by which the circumstances of non-practice or non-belief is evidenced in behavior that relates variegated customs toward totemic or spiritual mediations of value. beliefs happen.

@pauld @davidesalerno68 @cbontenbal @economics @smithkm @philosophy let's ask ourselves some question here-then: if it is true that the pedant and the philosopher go hand-in-hand; to what extent is steiner here-now abolishing aspects of the philosopher, what is explored in her Methodology? that is a point-ed question to raised for all intents and purposes. we might see other such similar developments in other authors, namely those wishing to disabuse us all of the structure that founds pedantry.

@pauld @davidesalerno68 @cbontenbal @economics @smithkm @philosophy a most obvious dynamic out of such discoveries is the phenomenon of pedantry, then: what would seem to involve learning (by children or anyone) to the extent that one "passes" by those expectations of the pedant, who might themselves only achieve enough learning (miming the philosopher) to ensure "students" keep up their studies, etc. this should be plain to all, and why it motivates steiners effort to abolish the term.

@pauld @davidesalerno68 @cbontenbal @economics @smithkm @philosophy elsewhere, like in dalal, it would explain why it is that a certain structuring of psychology, that of essentializing [child-ish] qualities to adults such that they are given to only those who achieve pedantry-class understanding for instruction, then limits the potential of what psychology is responsive to, as we have seen systematically throughout the misdiagnosis crisis plaguing the medical sciences today.
