Best practices for transferring an existing Linux installation from one drive to another?

Currently, my desktop computer has two storage devices attached: one 1TB NVME SSD, which has both Windows 10 and Linux Mint 21.2 installed on it (Each OS getting ~ 500 GB), and a 1TB SATA hard drive mostly used for Timeshift backups of the Linux Mint partition (Including my Home folder, for the record)....

I’ve made a few posts to arch forums and never faced issues.

Perhaps it helps that I work in enterprise tech support so I’m used to providing a lot of verbose info about a given issue I’m facing when requesting help. I also show what I’ve done in an attempt to resolve it.

Many of the so called toxic responses I’ve seen on there have been to posts that I would say don’t follow rules or just give very minimal info.

Trilby is also one of the best responders on there but have had a few blunt responses from others.

Ubuntu Core Desktop - Deep Dive (discourse.ubuntu.com)

Our recent blog post 2 introducing the upcoming Ubuntu Core Desktop explains what Ubuntu Core Desktop is and outlined many of the features and, more importantly, our modular approach using the capabilities of snap. This will be the first post in a series detailing the architecture of Ubuntu Core Desktop, explaining the...

Why make the filesystem so contrived just to bow to snaps, just seems all wrong to me.

But what do I know they dropped the kiss principle years ago.

    Sorry but it just can’t be boiled down to that sentence. I daily drive Linux and still disagree even though windows has obvious flaws.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    I use arch too and dualboot with windows.

    How are you updating drivers without sign in?

    I have a local account in windows.

    I see the AUR as suspicious until I establish a basic form of trust for what I want just like most .exe files and installers, I’d recommend you take this approach to the AUR too as it fundamentally is an obvious untrusted source.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    Sorry, I’ve never had to sign in to anything to be able to download and install an nVidia driver. I’ve been using their cards for decades. No idea where/how you’re getting them. Geforce experience is an optional add on if that is what you talk about.

    For convenience online there is always a trade off, When I do my update runs on windows each month this is one of my bookmarks. If I can’t be arsed I use SDI origins.

    I stopped using resolved as it tends to ignore what I tell it to do and still grab DNS from the router which I don’t want and can’t disable on the proprietary router.

    openresolv/Resolveconf was never broken in the first place so I’m not sure what systemd was trying to fix with this.

    This article has attracted the obvious responses it wants to attract.

    I bet many who’ve responded in agreement with the sentiment of this article use windows which is tied to a company that has done far worse than brave software.

    Edit: I am not sitting here for hour or more trying to figure out who is employed at a company of a piece of software I chose to use just to ensure their personal opinions, views and opinions align with current trends on what is sociably acceptable.

    If we all were to apply this to all the software we use you will fast find out that you’ll be looking for quite a few alternatives to what you assumed was neutral or aligned to your view point.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    Which ever one you chose don’t forget you need to do a good job at vetting all the top people involved just to ensure their personal morals and social opinions align with the current trends of social media.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    I just want the software I’ve chosen to work and do what I want it to well.

    I’m not choosing software based on anything else as it’s not part of my decision framework when making software choices. If it was where do you draw the line? Do we only vet the C tier if not why not vet the Dev team as they are the people that actually create the product , Then the Q&A and R&D teams because without them the software would be more buggy and not have cutting edge features.

    It’s just a rabbit hole that’s best avoided and for the most part I’d argue that 90% of people don’t think or even care about the points raised because it’s the last thing they think about when choosing a browser.

    Good for you if you do, That’s your choice.

    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    You’re mixing protocols on your share and access.

    You mount with NFS then try to access with gvfs-smb, What you actually need is gvfs-nfs.

    I use Arch xfce/awesomewm btw.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    So you need to work out what you actually want to access and use the correct protocol/command combo.

    You mentioned in your post 2 protocols SMB and NFS.

    If the share is SMB/windows then use mount -t cifs … (make life easier and ensure guest access is correct and working)

    If the share is NFS then use mount -t nfs … (beware that nfs is also version specific)

    Additionally use the correct gvfs tools either gvfs-smb or gvfs-nfs.

    And as always when using arch based distro’s refer to wiki for full setup guides/examples

    This is etched on to my soul and retina.

    If any Arch pc/laptop I use has not been touched in over 6 month this is the first command and I’m thinking of a way to make an alias called upgrade point to a function that checks the time of the last pacman.log entry against current time and if there is a 6 month or larger difference to automatically do this for me so I don’t forget lol.

    I’d like to daily drive EndeavourOS but I dislike Dracut and removing that is a bit of a pita, just wish they’d give an install option to not have it.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    Depends what I’m doing, where and how. I do use tmux everywhere though but at home xfce-terminal, At work I tend to use terminator for the wonders of group control but if connecting from a windows pc i’ll be on windows-terminal.

    For shell I try to use zsh everywhere with p10k and omz.

    I know they’re floppies but when I see them like this it always reminds me of the first intern role I had at datacard/gemplus UK, I had to change the disk stacks in the main frame at specific times with specific access codes, lift the lid and pull out the disk stacks, put them on a specific numbered trolly and insert the next stack.

    Was all very precise and I saw someone screw it once, glad it was a perm staffer and not me, I took so many notes on that process I dreamt of them for years.

    Gnome to me was like a DE trying really hard to be like Mac, I don’t want that. I didn’t want any of what Gnome 3 was offering and I still don’t.

    I have a Debian VM that I jump into to try out latest KDE and Gnome just to see how things are and I honestly do not want what Gnome is still trying to offer.

    So I’d happily shit on it and then find that corner of it to hook out the remaining crap from my butt cheeks.

    I’m glad you like it, but allow other to have their own opinion without making the assumption that people have simply not used it and that’s why they dislike it so hard.

    What’s the Firefox equivalent to:

    Brave.exe --app=“http://lemmy.world”

    I use this a lot as I detest electron based applications. Mozilla dropped prism years ago and before that there was xulrunner and you cant open a JavaScript popup window without clicking a bookmark.

    When Firefox has this very basic function perhaps I’ll consider moving.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    I use brave and this is built in and still gives me the protections offered by Brave.

    What protections does this offer?

    Additionally I see mention of electron in the code!!!

    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    This just changes the OS chrome on a browser tab right ?

    No this just opens the website in it’s own window so it looks similar to an electron app, another way to do this is to open chrome://apps, drag any bookmark to this window/tab and right click to create icons.

    It does nothing to the “OS” of the browser.

    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    Well TiL some programming terminology.

    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    Sorry but the less electron in my life the better.

    I see no need for ferdium if you have a good browser. It’s just something else picking up more mozilla shortfalls.

    t0m5k1 ,
    @t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

    I used this for awhile but it’s more of a framework that requires vcredist and a local install of pwaforff binary to work around the short comings of mozilla pulling the plumbing out of the browser.

    It’s a good workaround can have it’s issues when one part receives an update that the rest isn’t aware of.

    I came across this article way back when I was searching for a true to the name USB-C hub in that a device that gives you more than 1 usb-c socket!

    When I read the article I gave up searching for them and now refuse to by anything that resembles a USB-C hub due to this article and the lack of true to the name USB-C hubs.

    I have a bunch of USB-A to C adaptors and a USB-A self powered hub that gives me 7 USB-A ports 👍
