If you want to make a public school teacher’s jaw drop, just explain to them the qualifications required for someone to teach college courses.

It is a HUGE gulf. And there doesn’t seem to be any consistent push to actually value instruction at primarily research universities.

What’s the point of having classes taught by cutting edge researchers if they can’t actually communicate effectively to undergrads?

There are definitely people in higher education that know how to teach, research effective practices and effectively communicate those results. We just need more.

I’m just commenting from my experiences in higher education. Did my undergrad, grad, and post-doc at primary research institutions. Taught a number of semesters at a local community college. By far the most effective training I received for effective teaching was at the CC.
