macarthur_park , to news in US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana in a historic shift, AP sources say

If he wanted to do that he’d have pushed his AG to deschedule it entirely

The attorney general doesn’t set the drug classification level, that’s the DEA. This is power was established by a law passed by congress, so if Biden had his AG try to overrule that some states would sue and the Supreme Court would clearly side with them. He could have his AG refuse to prosecute any cannabis crimes, but that would immediately be undone the next time a conservative AG takes over and prosecutes everyone who got a pass now. Also, they’ve already been ignoring any cannabis prosecutions where it’s someone following state law.

Apart from congress passing a law legalizing cannabis (which is not possible with the republican house, not to mention most of the senate) having the DEA reschedule it is the only “permanent” path forward. And it has to be done to the letter of the law because you know some republican states will challenge this move.

That’s wild. I’ve always sent people copies when they reach out. It’s especially easy to do so with ResearchGate, but that does require the requester make an account there.

Another option is to ask a librarian to find that specific article, rather than getting them to subscribe to the journal. I had to do this once in grad school for an article in a discontinued journal from the 70s. The librarian found another library that had it and they faxed a copy.

macarthur_park , to news in A sheriff, a felon and a conspiracy theorist walk into a hotel. They’re there for the same conference.

They just don’t want to accept any authority, period. When the Bundy militia took over a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, they claimed that sheriffs superseded the federal government. So when a local sheriff met with them and told them to leave, they of course agreed to disagree and just ignored him.

Ha, so I did! Darn typing on mobile.

We never really left. The bigots just got quieter for a little while, or were louder about other targets (like trans folks). Remember that gathering storm ad scaremongering about fay marriage? Those beliefs don’t just disappear.

macarthur_park , to news in Right-wingers claim trans women have unfair advantage in hot dog-eating contests

Is that the Cyclone? If so it’s still there. I can confirm it’s super fun with just the right amount of “is this safe?”.

As annoying as it is to lug a bag around and find room for it, I much prefer this to checking it. There’s the small but nonzero chance your bag doesn’t make it to your destination, plus the added time waiting at baggage return.

God forbid they elect Mark Robinson as governor, then you have state level oppression again.

At an event in Greenville, Robinson said people who “are confused” about their gender should “find a corner outside somewhere to go” to the bathroom.

I lived in Chapel Hill during the 2016 election. The one silver lining to that Election Day was voting Pat McCrory out of office after his own bathroom bill nonsense.

macarthur_park , to news in ‘I am so scared of them now’: Burned from overspending, some ‘buy now, pay later’ users warn others away

Yeah, it would make much more sense to rent one for a day trip. Even a week vacation honestly.

macarthur_park , to news in ‘I am so scared of them now’: Burned from overspending, some ‘buy now, pay later’ users warn others away

I imagine it’s more of a canopy than a sleeping tent. Something like an EZ up tent that provides more shade than just an umbrella.

I’ve used them and they’re pretty nice, especially if you’re going to be at the beach all day and don’t wanna get sun burned. That being said, it’s still a big purchase for just one day trip. I’d only invest in one if you were using it regularly, or had like a week-long trip planned.

macarthur_park , to news in Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapses after column hit by large ship; vehicles, people in water

They closed it after the ship’s Mayday call.

Officials said in a news conference that a mayday had been issued before the collision, which allowed officials to stop traffic onto the bridge. Officials did not clarify how many vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Infrared video showed that vehicles did enter the water, but it’s not clear if those vehicles had occupants. Multiple vehicles remained in the river as of mid-morning.

So far they’re only saying that members of the construction crew are missing.

Six people remain unaccounted for, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said in a mid-morning news conference. All six were part of a construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge at the time, Wiedefeld said. Two other workers were rescued from the water.

Luckily the bridge was closed to traffic in both directions at the time, for construction. Unfortunately, the missing people are the construction crew.
