In every reported case where police mistakenly arrested someone using facial recognition, that person has been Black (www.businessinsider.com)

Was this AI trained on an unbalanced data set? (Only black folks?) Or has it only been used to identify photos of black people? I have so many questions: some technical, some on media sensationalism

lntl OP ,

Then the title would read:

In every reported case where police mistakenly arrested someone, that person has been Black

Yeah, that could be the case

lntl OP ,

I imagine that in China the headline would read:

In every reported case where police mistakenly arrested someone using facial recognition, that person has been Chinese

lntl OP ,

I think it is come systematic racism. AI didn’t arrest this person, police officers did. They did no further investigation before making the arrest because they didn’t have to: the person has black skin. Case closed.

lntl OP ,

That’s like saying people can’t be rascist, they have bad training.

MS’s Tay chatbot was demonstrably rascist FWIW

lntl OP ,

Yes, there are technical challenges when implementing an AI solution such as this one. From a leadership perspective; however, arrests cannot be made on AI predictions alone. They would be best used like an anonymous tip line that leads to further investigation, but not ever directly to an arrest.

lntl OP ,

demonstrable biases influenced by the society we live in, exist in and massively impact science and technology,

And then science and technology fortifies biases of society, it’s a feedback loop

lntl OP ,

That’s exactly my idea on media sensationalism. It’s really not a large sample. Way more people have been arrested and imprisoned by the justice system without any AI involvement.

lntl OP ,

I’ll check it out! Thanks for the recommendation

lntl OP ,

Sort of yeah. It’s like a mirror, it reflects what its presented.

lntl ,

They have nukes, my lemon. This has never be the solution.

Glad you’re not in charge. Currently, there is tension between Korean allies which unfortunately means there will be no peace for the Korean people.

I think with time, Korea can be peacefully reunified. It may not be in my lifetime, but one day I believe it will happen. As time move forward, new events and opportunites arise that may present the chance for reunification.

I suspect they’re estimating 100 yrs with a constant rate of consumption. What if, as we transition away from fossil-fuels, consumption rates grow? (RIP – Albert Bartlett)

The guy in the photo is fucked if he’s collecting evidence of anti-personnal landmines…

lntl ,

I think everyone would support a mine-free future

lntl ,

Damn, the French don’t play games

lntl ,

May the Korean people be reunified without bloodshed.

Yes and DPRK did just have a Kill All Americans rally in Pyongyang so I can understand why they had the idea to do this.

lntl ,

US policy toward DPRK is severe, always has been… nobody would disagree with that. I just wish there was a path towards peace and, unfortunately, neither state seems interested in that. I am bummed out by the hatred that has been cultivated by both sides towards one another over generations. Wish it was different.

lntl ,

Let’s be real, Korea isn’t the reason why the US still keeps a presence in the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. There exists a threat to US hegemony and interests in the region and as long as that exists, the US will continue with threats, sanctions, and violence. Since that doesn’t appear to be changing, I don’t see this path to peace. :(

Edit: Need to re-emphasize that what I am bummed out about is the intergenerational state-sponsored hatred of one another and I accidentally hit reply instead of preview

lntl ,

Thanks for the level response. Do you think the unraveling of the US empire will bring a final solution to the exploitation problem? I fear that the end of the US would create a power vacuum to be filled by another hegemonic empire. Maybe thinking about it is a waste of my time…

When I first read this comment, I thought "for sure, not black and white. This fella says there’s ‘incredibly positive changes and advancements’ "

Then I tried to think of one positive change or advancement that colonialism brought about. I’m sorry, my lemon, I’m calling BS. Honestly, the best thing I could come up with was “a bunch of bananas for 79¢” and frankly, that industry is horrifying.

lntl ,

we’re sorry

If you’re actually sorry, make ammends. Give the people of Congo your wealth Mr. King man.

lntl ,

You can do better than that. Sell the book to me, what are some perspectives?

I’ve visited indian residential schools in Canada, stood before the limestone blocks upon which slaves were displayed for trade in Virginia, and have seen the ecologic destruction caused by open-pit copper mining rural N America. These impact my view of colonialism. You’ve gotta give me something more than, “there’s one book you haven’t read that will change everything”

I don’t know what this guy was expecting to happen after openly criticizing the russian state and then remaining in country during the war.

Is he guilty? Probably not.

Is he a fool? Absolutely.
