Kia ora! I'm a #nature nut, addict of #iNaturalist NZ — Mātaki Taiao, and an #ecologist at #LincolnUniversity in #Aotearoa-#NewZealand.

I spend an inordinate amount of my time counting nature to watch what's changing (see https://wildcounts.org/).

Scientists!

Tell us about an lab/field organizational tip that you think can apply to other scientist's lab/field operations!

Is there anything you used to do in a way that cost more or wasted more or made data fuzzy or, but now you've created a way you like better?

Share! @academicchatter @plantscience

@ml @academicchatter @plantscience Date everything, and get into the habit of using an internationally unambiguous date format (eg 2024-08-07, or 7 Aug 2024 or Aug 7 2024, but never 7/8/2024).

If you’re forced to use Excel, ensure that dates are entered in a way that Excel cannot interpret the column as a date (eg force the column format to character, or type the date as the number 20240807). This avoids date data being occasionally scrambled and corrupted.

@nxskok @ml @academicchatter @plantscience Neat. I didn't know about Modern CSV. I'm looking at it now and it looks great!

I deleted Excel a long time ago, but I know some people are stuck on work computers with Office365 and cannot install better software.

@seindal @nxskok @ml @academicchatter @plantscience Possibly. I get date-scrambled data with postgrad students using Excel, but few use LibreOffice because our university supplies Excel. I use LibreOffice for simpler data entry but I’m careful not use date format columns. I’m wary of columns that don’t store what I type, and only store what they think I meant. In the case of LibreOffice Calc, when something it thinks is a date is typed, it stores the number of days since 12 Dec 1899.

Most of Plant Science Twitter seems to be on Bluesky. What are your favorite Fediverse accounts (institutional and/or personal) for keeping up with academic botanical news? @plantscience @academicchatter
