This week I've been manly reading, no. 167.

If the retelling of Greek myths is you thing, then you'll love Natalie Haynes' novel Stone Blind; Medusa’s Story (2022). Taking the tale of Medusa as its core, it relates the world of Greek myth through a feminist lens & sensibility, to offer a very modern view of the behaviour of Gods. Its really accessibly written, requires no knowledge of the myths & is highly engaging. Yes, I loved it!

I really enjoyed this, and especially the author's dry humour when discussing the relentlessly destructive and solipsistic behaviour of the gods and indeed most male characters, even while she brought home to the reader the brutal tragedy of Medusa's fate in this re-telling of an ancient story.

I can recommend "Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics" on BBC Radio (or the BBC Sounds app). Latest episode was on Cleopatra - fascibating and entertaining.
