Roku lays off 300 workers and removes streaming content to save money (www.engadget.com)

Roku looks to be seriously tightening its pursestrings. The company’s laying off a full ten percent of its workforce, over 300 employees, in addition to a conducting a number of other cost-cutting measures, as reported by Variety. These job cuts are just the beginning, as Roku’s also removing streaming content, consolidating...

Is it bad that I’m becoming numb to losing my digital rights?

It’s good. Their ban on browser forks is a bit annoying, though.

In the UK, a lot of our government still uses XP and a lot of our public embedded devices (e.g. the tills in the Co-Op) run on Internet Explorer.

Some random Thai hacker using 7 isn’t that much of a stretch.

It’s a kind of shop. They do other things as well, but the shop is the most memorable. Co-Op is short for “Co-Operative”.

They’re related to the Co-Op Party, which is part of the Labour party (a popular left-wing political party).

Here’s the Wikipedia article on the shop: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co-op_Food

And here are the other businesses that the Co-Operative Group are a part of: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Co-operative_brand#Uses…

Even as a British person who has grown up with this organisation, though, I still don’t really understand it.

There’s a book I think everyone should read, and it’s not Nineteen Eighty-Four.

For people wanting to take down drones, I think a directed energy weapon would work. It uses a beam high frequency radio waves or microwaves to disable electronics. Since there’s no projectile, it would be easier to use without getting caught.

Got it.

how do you theme graphical apps in a wm?

Pretty much all graphical apps that dont have thier own theming option (like firefox) are always just the white background default theme. No matter wether it’s qt or gtk. Wich files would i need to edit to change that? Searching on the internet only told me that i should change an environment variable bit doing so changed...

hellfire103 ,
@hellfire103@sopuli.xyz avatar

There are normally config files for GTK at ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.

Qt themes are configured differently. For Qt5 and Qt6, set the environment variable QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE. If you still use Qt4 for anything, config is done in ~/.config/Trolltech.conf. Refer to the ArchWiki for help.

I personally prefer GUIs, though, so I’d recommend the following:

  • For GTK 2 & 3: LXAppearance
  • For GTK 3 & 4: Gradience
  • For Qt: qt5ct, qt6ct, and/or Kvantum

My school moves everyone up after the GCSEs and A-Levels are over, which is in May or June. The holiday starts in July.

As far as I know, we’re the only school in Britain that does this.

hellfire103 OP ,
@hellfire103@sopuli.xyz avatar

Instead of moving up to the next year (the British term for “grade”) in September, we do it after the exams (finals) are over, which is in June.

hellfire103 OP ,
@hellfire103@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah, but high school starts at year 9 (age 13-14), so:

(Y9 doesn’t exist for a bit)

Y9 --> Y10

Y10 --> Y11

Y11 --> (Either leave school or just take a few extra weeks off)

Y12 --> Y13

Y13 --> (Leave school*)

This is done because, after the exams, the Y11s and Y13s have no content left to learn, so there’s no point in keeping them at school.

Also, as I said, my school is strange for doing this. Most, if not all, other British high schools are normal.

*Unless you get held back, stay on for another year, or go to university

TL;DR: Yeah, pretty much

North East England. Around here, it goes like this:

  • 4-8 years: First School
  • 8-13 years: Middle School
  • 13-16 years: High School

then

  • 16-18 years: College or Sixth Form
  • 18+: University, etc.

You are probably used to the two-tier system, with a primary school and a secondary school. Around here, though, we mainly have a three-tier system.

Pretty sure that’s acid you’re talking about.

Google calendar won't open links in Firefox iOS (lemmy.sdf.org)

It’s the only browser I have installed besides Safari, and my default browser but instead of just opening the link with my default browser, it advertises these other browsers to me and makes me click ‘Default browser app’ by default. wtf I’ll be turning that off, should have never been a feature.

hellfire103 ,
@hellfire103@sopuli.xyz avatar

Set Firefox as your default browser by going to Settings > Firefox > Default Browser App.

Also, by adding your Gmail to iOS, you can get your Google calendars through the Apple Calendar app.

That is, of course, assuming the Russians were behind this; there’s always a slight chance that it really was an accident.
