That’s what happens when you mix up the Democractic Party and democracy, believing they’re the same thing.

Hint: they are not.

Besides, you have to rememeber there’s a large segment of left(ish) voters who may not show up on election day unless there is a leadership change. Keeping Biden would almost guarantee they stay home.

Because we’re discussing trying to pass a law to keep geriatrics out of important, decision making positions?

Those ‘geriatrics’ often have the wisdom that younger judges lack.

I would like to see a group of judges in charge of evaluating judges’ rulings when it becomes apparent that they are being led by something other than the law in their decisions.

girlfreddy ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Things work different up here, ie: judges are never elected - always appointed; our judiciary rules based on our Constitution, Charter of Rights and Freedoms and common law (not original intent or civil law [except Quebec]); and treaty rights for First Nations peoples (and sometimes Metis and Inuit).

@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

I dunno. I’m not 97. But I am in my mid 60’s and what I do know is my wisdom has grown immensely since I was 40. So who’s to say that can’t happen for someone in their 90’s?

I will add that I am not specifically supporting this judge’s argument (that she’s fine) because she is clearly putting out ruling that are not based on the law. But neither is SCOTUS, and for very different reasons.

I would still prefer a tribunal-type scenario that has the authority to investigate and remove judges based on facts, not just age.

Reports and rumors about black ops by Greek authorities have floated around for years, but the idea of state-sanctioned thugs running around beating migrants, throwing them in the trunks of cars, and forcing them back onto boats was too much for Mulla to believe. “It’s a European Union country,” he told an interviewer from...

Instead of, you know, sticking by The New Colossus.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles.

From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

‘I was handed to a complete stranger’: the survivors fighting to end child marriage in 37 US states — and the people who want to keep it legal (www.theguardian.com)

Child marriage, which activists describe as one or both parties entering a union while under age 18, remains legal in 37 US states. There are no federal laws against it, meaning minors can marry, with parental consent, before they can vote, drink, or buy lottery tickets in the majority of the country. Some states have a minimum...

50 years ago I was living with a guy who decided to beat me one night. After he fell asleep I walked over to the emergency clinic to get checked out. But because I wasn’t 18, and neither of my parents lived in the same province as I did, the hospital made me go back home to get my 18 yr old boyfriend’s signature … so the guy who just kicked the shit out of me had to give the hospital permission to help me.

There is some data out there (that I read like 20 years ago and can’t find anymore) that tested two groups of juvenile rats. One group lived 24/7 with mom, and the other split time between mom and their buddies, playing and doing dumb young animal shit.

The scientists discovered that the rats with mom had a less developed brain vs the ones who split time. They posited it was due to the split time rats having to navigate friendships and conflict, forcing their brains to develop more complex neural pathways.

Extrapolating this to humans you can see what the repercussions would be (and in my experience, has become).

girlfreddy OP ,
@girlfreddy@lemmy.ca avatar

Yup. How do you learn to make informed choices when you’ve never been given the opportunity to learn what that entails? Same with conflict, relationships, etc.

The plasticity of the brain (maybe?) allows for the brain to grow and change, but I haven’t spent the time to look up more recent developments and see what info is out there.

The system is not the problem, greed is, and it’s not capitalism-induced greed , it’s part of human nature.

Rampant, unfettered capitalism exponentially enhances greed as more people gain unlimited wealth.

The way to limit greed is to have laws in place that limit capitalism. Unfortunately many of those laws we used to have were dismantled during the trickle-down era of Reagan and Thatcher.

So DHS decided to rely on that info which never looked at SolarWinds …

  • Silvers told ProPublica that DHS decided the board didn’t need to do its own review of SolarWinds as directed by the White House because the attack had already been “closely studied” by the public and private sectors.

Soon after The Times began asking questions, (Ryan O’Leary, the de facto commander of Chosen Company and a former U.S. Army National Guardsman from Iowa) vowed to find out who was speaking to journalists.

“Some stuff the reporter brought up was only known by a few people,” he wrote in a group chat. “But we will cast a wide net regardless to snare the rabbit.”

It’s always ‘blame the whistleblower’ vs realizing murder is a war crime.
