Hmm, Newpipe works fine for me but really heavy websites definitrly are a pain, still clearly usable all in all tho and considering how much slower smartphone development is now I have no doubts a good device will be usable in eight years, you can look at the computer side to tell that hardware requirements for general use probably won’t increase much for the forseeable future!

Well and a faster boot time but it’s definitely a learning curve and not really worth it unless you want to try a Distro that ships something else by default (E.g. Alpine).

I never had a fast NVME SSD so my devices boot significantly slower than yours but unless you are actually at the point of instant booting it’s about half the boot time for me. I only use OpenRC on my Pinephone because it’s the default for PostmarketOS (a Alpine based OS for mobile phones) and never found a good enough reason to use it on my actual computer but it’s quite a bit faster and also quite a bit less convinient so all in all probably not worth it but still impressive to watch!

Well SteamOS is Arch based but running a LTS kernel with backported changes in a ummutable way with everything sandboxed in Flatpak so it’s quite unique but idk why anyone would want to run it on their desktop, if the immutable aspect is so interesting ro you you can try Fedora Silverblue, Vanilla OS and co. but none of those is in a state that I would recommend as “just works” for a desktop experience, if that’s the majore goal Debian or Fedora with Gnome are probably your best options.

You can implement Telementry in a privacy preserving way if you put in some effort but a lot of technical details are anything but unique and absolutely a risk to your privacy, not to talk about what big tech sometimes calls Telemetry. You can disable the majority of tracking in Windows but that takes literal hours and a lot of knowledge and the highest settings (if you aren’t on the enterprise version) still tell you that some data is send to Microsoft servers without specifiying what that is. Portmaster is a cool app but all you can see there are servers your computer connects to and every Windows computer unless it’s cribbled down to the point where updates are disabled connects to Microsoft servers which is okay but also ensures that you can’t know from that data…

Cinnamon is a little heavier on the hardware but especially with Linux Mint it’s a great choice to get into Linux and a Debian base is a great choice, you won’t utelize any new features on that hardware and it’s really stable! About KDE, that’s actually very light weight too so you shouldn’t have any issues in that regard if you decide to use it especially in comparison to Cinnamon, I would just recommend Mint Cinnamon more for a new user! :)

Gnome is probably usable but definitely not ideal on old low end hardware, Pop is a great Distro and I love Gnome but I wouldn’t recommend it in this case, maybe that’s why.

The main issue here is how aggressive Fuckbook is when it comes to the messager, since they started to hide it on mobile devices they fucked with every attempt to revive that functionality with a none Fuckbook apps till the creator gave up. They are bad enough with normal clients (most of those died for a reason) but somehow even worse when it comes to the messager!

Judiging from the culture war the alt-right started to adopt in europe and other global leader changes (E.g. India) in the past few years I highly disagree, there is more accaptance in the general population but over all there are more and more countries LGBTQ people aren’t welcome in or have to flee from and the pure hate appears even here in Austria and in our neighbor countries. Trump of all people put it very well, five years ago his audiance didn’t even know what trans is and now they get more excited about it than about tax cuts. I do agree that the world generally moves towards neo liberal ideas rouggly since the early 2000s and that workers right are at risk too, that’s just not a very new development, stuff like that simply gains visibility during a crisis.
