A Lab Test That Experts Liken to a Witch Trial Is Helping Send Women to Prison for Murder in Multiple U.S. States (www.propublica.org)

The “lung float” test claims to help determine if a baby was born alive or dead, but many medical examiners say it’s too unreliable. Yet the test is still being used to bring murder charges — and get convictions....

Inmate Deaths Raise Questions About Temperatures in Oklahoma Prisons (oklahomawatch.org)

Tonya Wilson Peel, a former correctional case manager at Dick Conner who worked alongside Lanford during her employment at the prison, said he had a sharp sense of humor and loved his job making license plates for the State of Oklahoma. She said Lanford had complained of excessive heat for several weeks leading up to his death...

The use of jailhouse snitches in Orange County bungled at least 57 criminal cases, public defender says (ghostarchive.org)

Defense attorneys said last year they believe 21 defendants accused of murder and other serious felonies were affected by the scandal and had their convictions vacated, sentences reduced or new trials ordered. It was around that time the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil rights division found that the Orange County...

Liberty University broke safety laws for years, government asserts (ghostarchive.org)

Liberty failed to warn the campus community about gas leaks, bomb threats and people credibly accused of repeated acts of sexual violence — including a senior administrator and an athlete — according to the report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post. Two people familiar with the conclusions, who spoke on the...

Pinal Sheriff Mark Lamb’s office spent $200K on guns and ammo from an ‘inmate welfare' fund (azluminaria.org)

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office run by U.S. Senate candidate Sheriff Mark Lamb has spent at least $217,000 from a jail commissary fund that Arizona lawmakers mandated be used “for the benefit and welfare of inmates” to instead buy a cache of weapons, ammunition and ballistic vests....

I mean, the only thing happening here is Biden worrying, so, no, I don’t think they could. It’s not like they could write a news story talking about steps Biden has taken to deal with this problem, there aren’t that many ways to say “nothing.”

In Los Angeles' Men’s Central Jail, fires are common, smoke alarms are not: Smells 'like a campfire' (www.latimes.com)

Men who’ve spent time in the 60-year-old downtown Los Angeles lockup say inmates are given cold food every day of the week — so sometimes they start blazes to heat it or cook their own. Other times, they use clandestine fires to warm their coffee, light contraband cigarettes or drugs, create jailhouse air freshener or just...

North Carolina Prison staffer sounds alarm on solitary confinement, overcrowding (ncnewsline.com)

The same way punk rock got popular after Jimi Hendrix and a bunch of other people pushed the envelope in terms of technical musicianship, people wanted something new and the logical place to go was into making something simpler and more aggressive

“Friend” or family member tipping off police and/or subpoenas for electronic messages are two ways that spring to mind, but those can be prevented if people are vigilant

Exactly, it’s a complete disgrace that people will have to be mindful of this crap just to get the reproductive healthcare they need, but if the government can’t stop a people from transporting big old stinky plants on a regular basis good luck stopping people from delivering a few pills on the occasions when they’re needed

Exactly, and if you have a fundamentalist Christian friend who seems like a nice person (if you volunteer in animal shelters or food banks or the like you run into a lot of these), know that they will get you arrested without a moment’s doubt and just pray extra hard for you while you’re sitting in a jail cell

At least until there are substantial law changes, I’m pretty sure that would require a warrant

gAlienLifeform ,
@gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not a lawyer either, but I think you’re absolutely right about potential legal vulnerability, but that probable cause isn’t going to be an easy thing for the prosecution to get. Like, miscarriages just happen all the time, and (theoretically) the strength of probable cause a judge would want to ok a “we’re taking some of your bodily fluids” warrant is going to be about as high as it gets.

“He’s gone and we’re not gonna say why, but if you point that out we’re not going to call you the next time we have some news and we’ll never issue a press pass to anyone from your organization ever again.” - The Navy (probably)

Still no excuse for just slapping your masthead on their press release and calling it journalism, but there may be a bit of nuance here

That really doesn’t mean anything since the IBEW was one of the unions that was willing to sign the railroads’ contract before the strike. It was the other unions that railroads dealt with that rejected that deal and would’ve gone on strike if Biden and Congress hadn’t stopped them.

Only some unions got part of what they wanted

Further on in that article,

But the unions representing workers who operate the trains day to day, such as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, have had far less success reaching agreement on paid sick days. “The railroads went to the non-operating crafts first and cut a deal with them,” said Mark Wallace, first vice-president of the Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. “If a carman [who inspects and repairs railcars] has to call in sick and doesn’t come to work, the train will still run. If the engineer or conductor has to call in sick, the train is probably not going to go that day.”

Wallace said his union was negotiating with the major railroads, but said they were seeking to make it harder for the operations workers than non-operational workers to take paid sick days – perhaps by giving them demerits when they do.

Biden to walk the picket line in Michigan to support UAW strikers (www.cnn.com)

President Joe Biden will travel to Michigan on Tuesday and walk the picket line with members of the United Auto Workers union, he announced Friday, a trip that comes after the president faced political pressure to ramp up his public support for the union members....

I remember a state of the union address where he said, “It’s time for Americans to get back to work and fill our great downtowns again,” like people didn’t bust their asses working from home during the pandemic. Small moment but it always really stuck in my mind for showing how he thinks of the commercial property owning class before he thinks about workers.

Not joking, I honestly think some Democratic party members were (understandably) traumatized by Trump being elected and being president, and that (unfortunately) causes them to be hyper-aggressive douchebags when it comes to supporting Biden, which is sort of understandable but also thoroughly exhausting and really does harm to this country by making it difficult for people to discuss why things have continued to get worse under Biden and where improvements need to be made

Not what happened

…this September, Biden reversed course, helping negotiate a deal between railroad bosses and unions that would only grant workers a single paid sick day per year, despite the unions pushing for as many as 15 sick days — a number they were ultimately willing to reduce to as few as four. Now, to avoid a shutdown of the nation’s rail network, he is asking Congress to force that deal on workers who voted to reject it.

An initial solution looked to have been found from an old Fallout 4 VR thread on Steam, where the same problem could be fixed by using a console command to change the player’s sex.

In Starfield, the same command works, but all you need to do to fix the bug is enter the character customisation screen. Using console commands, this can be done by entering ‘showlooksmenu player 2’. If you’re playing Starfield on console, you can visit an Enhance Clinic for 500 credits to get into the character customisation. You don’t actually have to change your appearance, as players have reported that simply entering and exiting customer customisation makes weapons work as intended once again.

This was already true, but is even more so now - Bethesda should make console commands available on Xbox immediately. Besides the fact that there was no reason to restrict them to PC players in the first place, they’re almost certain to be necessary for all sorts of weird troubleshooting that’s likely to come up in any game this big.
