A long time ago, a nun named Ursel lived in a distant abbey in Thuringia. She disturbed the choir with her howling singing while alive, and thus she was called "Hooting Ursel". It became worse after her death, for at eleven o'clock in the evening, she put her head through a hole of the church tower and hooted pitifully. Furthermore, every morning at four o'clock, she joined the singing of the other nuns unasked. They endured this for a few days, but on the third morning one of them fearfully whispered to her neighbor: "This is surely Ursel!" Then, suddenly, all singing ceased, their hairs stood on ends, and the nuns fled from the church while loudly crying: "Hooting Ursel, Hooting Ursel!" And no punishment could force the nuns to step into the church until finally a famous devil banisher was fetched from a Capuchin monastery near the Danube. He bound Hooting Ursel to the Domburg in the Harz mountains[2] in the form of an eared owl. Here she met Hackelnberg, and she found as much enjoyment in his "hey, hey!" as he did in her "Hoot!", and in this manner they both hunt through the air. Source: Grimm, J. and W.
