Something interesting found on LinkedIn that made the little riot in me rejoice:

Degrowth Journal has a new call for paper for their new special issue:

"Anarchy and Degrowth"

Things are getting serious (finally)

BoD: 'Take down this dangerous article magisterially framing the taboo of taboo 'Nakba' as a legal concept'

CLR: 'It's valid and serious scholarship, we won't take it down'

BoD: Fine [Nuke Website protocol activated]

If it wasn't tragic, it would be hilarious.

"We call upon our colleagues in the homeland and internationally to support our steadfast attempts to defend and preserve our universities for the sake of the future of our people, and our ability to remain on our Palestinian land in Gaza. We built these universities from tents. And from tents, with the support of our friends, we will rebuild them once again."

@immibis @academicchatter Western politicians love Israel, it is their favourite pet project that keeps the fantasies of colonisation and tech dystopia alive, so I have absolutely no faith in them. But as a scholar, the silence of universities that pride themselves over DEI and decolonisation, speaks volume about how empty all those words are, when acting on them means upsetting (white supremacist) funders.

OK, I think it's time to share this question because it's really bothering me and need some external perspectives. Are there any other scholar - possibly someone like me, really at the bottom of the academic pyramid - that is hesitant to sign pledges of solidarity with the Palestinian people because feels somehow it can jeopardise their career? I am asking because I am currently not feeling safe in expressing my views and I wonder if I'm just being paranoid

@ia Writer new feature of keep in track of AI generated text is interesting (but won't do much for me because I am against using unethical tools build of stolen material). Instead, as is trending on YouTube, I wonder if they will ever implement a good citation feature to help with proper referencing.
I love iA Writer, but I find kind of sad that we're more worried on citing a machine, than implementing fair creative practices first, like citing your sources properly

One of the weirdest experience in this social media ecology was to receive an email today from the research hub of a faculty announcing they've joined and inviting all of us to follow them there. They specified you need a code link. But they have none.

A university hub. In an exclusive social media club. I have no words (which is very, very rare).

Hello and
I have a question for you (which might sound a bit provocative, but it's an actual genuine question).

What is really the value of Auto-ethnography?

I notice a new trend in some PhD group chat (Humanities) of students resorting to this method for their research. I'm personally puzzled, because beyond some reflexivity, how can a n=1 sample being any representative? Also, isn't it a very individualistic take on research?

@academicchatter

alx OP ,
@alx@mastodon.design avatar

@JorgeR_N @academicchatter I agree that reflexivity is a strong point. As you mention, it needs first a good methodological approach (I see for example a lot of ethical questions in auto-ethnography), but also, reflexivity is valuable if inserted into a broader context where self-ethnography become just one point of the research, not the entire project, imho

alx OP ,
@alx@mastodon.design avatar

@LouisGough @academicchatter I'm with you on the illusion of 'objectivity' especially in the social science, but that should also be a discussion beyond auto-ethnography (though the latter might be a good starting point)

I'm in a tough point in my journey as changes in supervisory team are slowing things down and leaving me with a lot of uncertainty, while of course, I have like 1K of deadlines approaching.
So, for the first time in my life, I'm publicly admitting my mental health is in need of a boost, so please send good vibes :)

Cute pictures to remind me the beauty of our world are also welcome!

@koen_hufkens @academicchatter yes, I find also amazing the vagueness of the article in not defining ever what is that 'you cannot say', which I find very disturbing and very worrisome, as I think that framing the academic debate into a simplistic 'free speech' without entering in the matter of what people felt they couldn't express will just trivialise and radicalise discussion (like we see on social media)

It seems like Mastodon is losing its mindshare to among many academics.

I can't help but think this has to do with the self-imposed limitations of Mastodon — lack of quotes, ordered timeline, etc. Makes it less interesting to use, for no real advantage.

Sad, because the underlying decentralization is much more robust.

@tiago @jwildeboer @academicchatter I found a vibrant academic community. From hard sciences to social sciences, from arts and humanities to engineering, there's plenty of academics happily sharing their research and engaging in conversations.
Maybe the superstars aren't here because they prefer a broadcast medium that promote them, but it isn't true that the academic community isn't represented here.
Moreover, there's no exclusive rule, you can be on both the Fedi & Bluesky and enjoy both.

alx ,
@alx@mastodon.design avatar

@tiago @jwildeboer @academicchatter interesting that you are ascribing agency to the platform, instead to academics. Building communities, online or offline, is people’s responsibility, online platforms are just enablers. Your entire discussion is a patronising rant that reduce behavioural choices to design features, as if the sole responsible of academics choosing Bluesky over the Fediverse is Mastodon design team. That’s not only wrong, but also ignores a very vibrant academic community here.

alx ,
@alx@mastodon.design avatar

@tiago @jwildeboer @academicchatter I think the only one here not making any effort is you, keeping patronising designers and again confusing agency as a matter of design, not as a matter of social dynamics. You keep asking for evidence why you're the first confusing your perception as stats, as, while it might be true that the academic community is scattering, there's been an academic community here far before the Twitter collapse.
Stop giving design lessons to designers.
