Quaglin complained about his jail conditions

I absolutely love how republicans all think prisons are insufficiently cruel, then suddenly become prison abolitionists, but only for Trump and Jan 6ers.

Like nah they’re treating you with kiddy gloves. People got decades for non-violent crimes during the George Floyd protests.

alcoholicorn ,

The guy was crazy for appearing in the documentary without a mask in the first place.

Did he really think the empire trying to subjugate his people was going to protect him once he outlived his usefulness?

alcoholicorn ,

Why would you expect such an empire to help him once he was of no further use?

Like if they wanted to help people like him, they wouldn’t be there in the first place, let alone funding the very worst warlords, protecting the drug trade, locking people up in blacksites and torturing them, protecting Blackwater and others from prosecution for their crimes, etc.

You have to be really, really fucking evil for people to support the Taliban over you.

alcoholicorn ,

Do you blame a scorpion for stinging someone who picks it up?

alcoholicorn ,

made-it-the-fuck-up All we’re saying is give war a chance!

alcoholicorn ,

They can barely take the Russian-speaking parts of Ukraine, you really think they’re gonna invade the rest of Europe?

alcoholicorn ,

Good point.

Better sacrifice your housing, education, infrastructure, and medical budgets for Raytheon shareholders just in case.

alcoholicorn , (edited )

Where do you think that money must come from?

Every dollar that is spent on bombs is a dollar that doesn’t go into feeding, housing, and educating the people.

alcoholicorn ,

Yeah, great parting speech. Shame he spent his entire presidency letting MacArthur and Lemay do war crimes in Korea and propping up the military industrial complex.

The man died because of a kinetic interaction with a small piece of element 82 (pb if you want to be fancy) vs The man was shot

The specifics of the mechanism is less important than why it happened.

Reminder that almost 10 years ago, Reddit accidentally released that their most “reddit-addicted” city was Eglin Airforce Base, which has multiple Cyberspace units.

If any government is trying to influence you on an american-based english-speaking websites, it’s the American government.

alcoholicorn ,

Sure, and I bet you think the NSA only spies on foreigners.

alcoholicorn , (edited )

The idea that the US gov’t doesn’t propagandize the US people is just so laughable and observably false.

The most popular non-sports video game series is US propaganda. The most funded Hollywood movies, Marvel et al, has the military literally approve the scripts beforehand.

Reddit’s current Director of Policy worked the Atlantic Council and had no experience in social media before working for Reddit and purging it of popular leftist communities. After October 7th, they put out a message banning war footage or propaganda showing the Palestinian perspective.

Notice how Reddit is overwhelmingly pro-Ukraine, anti-russian, anti-Iranian, anti-chinese, and pro-zionist? Literally zero difference between what the major subreddits support and what the state department would want them to support.

alcoholicorn ,

Oh fuck off with that, I read your post, the point you were making was that the US propaganda operations must not be bigger than other countries because it is “piss poor” if it exists. I gave you evidence of its existence and its effectiveness.

Respond to the core point, or any of the evidence that the US has bigger propaganda operations directed at the US than any other country could possibly manage and quit squirming.

When someone restates the points of your arguments, that’s not dishonesty.

This is useless, nothing I say is going to get around your quibbling.

Democratic US lawmakers introduce bill to bar foreign payments to president (www.reuters.com)

Democratic U.S. lawmakers introduced legislation on Tuesday that would bar the president and other top officials from accepting payments from foreign governments while in office, a measure clearly aimed at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump....

alcoholicorn ,

Why limit it to foreign governments, and why limit it to the president?

Hell why not limit congress and the president to the conditions of the lowest quartile?

It’s not like billionaires and corporations interests are any more aligned with the people than foreign governments. This has the bonus effect of essentially banning Trump if he doesn’t want to give up his wealth.

alcoholicorn ,

I’d avoid non-DS1/3/ER souls-likes to start with, because they tend not to have multiplayer.

There’s nothing wrong with summoning a friend or stranger to help you get through a difficult bit.

not accepting some fatalistic inevitability about the future.

He is describing an inevitability; Socialism or Barbarism.

alcoholicorn ,

He’s an exceptional person, who should be treated as such, like RBG.

The close friend of Scalia’s who opposed worker’s rights, indigenous rights, and held up the constitutionality of solitary confinement? The one who prioritized her ego over not giving Trump an extra SCOTUS pick?

I have my criticisms of Bernie, but I would never put him in that category.

Some of the locals were pretty gross, blaming other people in their same situation for not having enough “work ethic” instead of looking at the actual causes.

Appalachia is pretty poor, but it’s nothing like the reservations that, if they ever had industry, the locals never saw a nickle of.

alcoholicorn ,

How many of those engineers are gonna end up at Lockheed or Raytheon?

Always knew he’d die with one or more bears inside him.

Zelensky: 'Our partners fear that Russia will lose this war' (kyivindependent.com)

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that Ukraine’s partners “are afraid of Russia losing the war” and would like Kyiv “to win in such a way that Russia does not lose,” Zelensky said in a meeting with journalists attended by the Kyiv Independent....

While we really don’t want a state with thousands of nukes to splinter, I doubt that any policy writers in DC feel that way, given the eulogies they gave to Navalny, a guy who had politics somewhere around Mussolini’s and made Putin look like a dove.

But also the fact that we have like 8000 tanks in the desert that we’re not sending tells me that they’d rather fight Russia to the last drop of Ukrainian blood than actually break Russia so who knows.

alcoholicorn ,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexei_Navalny#Political_po…

Navalny co-founded the National Russian Liberation Movement, known as NAROD (The People), which sets immigration policy as a priority.[437] The movement allied itself with two nationalist groups, the Movement Against Illegal Immigration and Great Russia

Those groups are both pretty big on fashy iconography

In the same year, he released several anti-immigration videos,[439][440][441][442] including one where he advocated the deportation of migrants.[443] In one of the videos, in which he advocates for gun rights, he compares Muslims from the Caucasus to cockroaches and mimics shooting one who attempts to “attack” him.

His views on foreign policy evolved over time.[448] He had initially supported the Russo-Georgian War in 2008,[456] having asked the Russian army to strike the Georgian General Staff, calling Georgians “rodents”[457] and requesting that all Georgian citizens be expelled from the Russian Federation.[458] He later apologized for insulting the Georgians, while stating that his principled position remained unchanged.

IKR. The way such easily accessible information was entirely ignored in western media insane.

People look at me like I’m crazy when I say portraying the guy as Putin’s biggest rival is sillier than if Russian papers started claiming Pete Buttigeig was Trump’s biggest rival, since at least Mayo Pete didn’t come in 4th in a mayoral race.

alcoholicorn ,

Yeah, circumstances are very different now. Back then the Russian bourgeoisie thought they’d get to join the club. Now they have very little incentive to abide such deals.

Also there’s way more right-wing psychos.

alcoholicorn ,

Yeah no they didn’t need to go to the hospital, as a kid I titrated up to 8 pills at once before I decided it didn’t work.

alcoholicorn ,

Even if it’s not on the menu, it’s not like you can’t get X neat or on the rocks.

alcoholicorn ,

For Ukraine’s sake, I really hope someone diposes Putin in a coup

Yeah you don’t want that, the second biggest party is the communists, but from what I hear they’re not really communists, just boomers nostalgic for the USSR.

The nationalists waiting in the wings to seize power are even more psychotic than Putin.

The liberals are a distant 4th want to bring back the 90s, which created the conditions that got us here.

The communists would maintain the war for the same reasons the Putin does

The nationalists would make it 10x worse

The libs might end the war, but would definitely immiserate all of Russia again so the nationalists have an easier time recruiting.

alcoholicorn , (edited )

But chinese people have protests all the time. Do you think they all get disappeared? Or did the media make that shit up so you don’t feel bad about the US doing the same shit?

Shit, in 2020, we saw the biggest protests since the Iraq War (which the media didn’t cover), and every single city responded by saying “You can’t do that, it’s illegal”, and proceeded to beat the shit out of them and disappear them in significant numbers.

99% of the time, such direct actions are unnecessary as the media is very effective at shutting down criticism of the government. Just look at the coverage of student protests.

alcoholicorn ,

The fact that they’re putting forum results ahead of web seems like they’re just throwing in the towel on having useful web results that aren’t just searching thing+reddit/stackoverflow.

alcoholicorn ,

Nuance isn’t required here. Zionists want a theocratic apartheid state, Palestinians want a multi-ethnic, multi-religious state.

It’s not Hamas bombing churches in Gaza. It wasn’t Hamas who bombed Bethlehem and burned down the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.

alcoholicorn ,

A 2 state solution was never realistic. Throwing out unworkable peace solutions or quibbling over details instead of outright saying they’re not ready for peace so that they can continue violence is a US (and israeli) tactic you’ll see over and over.

The US and Israel both knew Palestine was never gonna give up its best land to hostile invaders, as the borders would make their economy entirely dependent on Israel, and Israel media made it very clear that such a state would only be temporary.

alcoholicorn ,

If they integrated Russia into NATO/EU in the 90s instead of stripping it for parts, it would have been the end of history for at least a generation.

alcoholicorn , (edited )

It’s why I don’t bother traveling. Little bit of different geography and I’m still just hanging out inside for comfort and amenities.

Have you considered not staying at a resort/cruise ship? Like yeah I don’t understand why people who just hang out inside travel either, that’s why I don’t do that.

alcoholicorn ,

But the rest of the planet has so much to offer!

alcoholicorn ,

I mean if you’re really into geology, sure. I find the people and their cultures a lot more interesting though.

alcoholicorn ,

Native Hawaiian life expectancy was 76 before covid

Uhyghur life expectancy was 75 before covid

Where is your genocide?

More Tibetans speak Tibetan and Uyghurs speak Uyghur than Hawaiians speak Hawaiian so you can’t claim teaching mandarin along side their native languages in schools is cultural genocide.

Also the moral thing is the thing that doesn’t cook the planet; cheap solar panels and EVs displacing coal and ICE engines.

alcoholicorn , (edited )

lmao that article cites Adrien Zenz and a guy who works for the department of defense.

Anyone can just go to Xinjiang, there’s not even travel restrictions.

Regarding Tibet, it was a slave-owning theocracy before the 50s. Your “cultural cleansing” is the liberation of countless peasants at the expense of the former ruling lamas.

If the people wanted their masters back, they wouldn’t have lynched the lamas the CIA trained and armed and air-dropped into Tibet in the late 50s (kinda like Bay of Pigs, but dumber).

But once again, they’re far more able to practice their culture than the indigenous people in America. I don’t see any air force bases or pipelines poisoning the aquifers in Tibet like you see today, right now, in indigenous communities in America. I don’t see Sioux people learning primarily in their native languages in public schools in America. They do in Tibet though.

Why is it that you cry endless tears about the breaking of the slave system and teaching mandarin as a second language on the other side of the planet, while an actual, ongoing genocide of native Americans continues right in front of you?

alcoholicorn ,

Were you not aware the auto and oil lobbies you’re paying to get stuck in traffic for 20 minutes to get to a place a mile away are a huge portion of the capitalists who own our politicians?

alcoholicorn , (edited )

I don’t think the average Chinese person is as rabidly nationalistic as Americans and Russians though.

Give me Tehran and Jacksonville. Miami and Havana. Nashville and Pyongyang.

alcoholicorn ,

300,000 people in East Timor certainly didn’t deserve Carter supplying Indonesia with the tools to carry out genocide.

alcoholicorn ,

East Timor (genocide), Afghanistan (Operation Cyclone started under Carter), Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia (Operation Condor).

alcoholicorn , (edited )

Neither of us live in China, and they had nothing to do with the atrocities the US facilitated under Carter (which admittedly, is less than any other recent president), why are you bringing them up?

He did good things after the presidency, but acknowledging that Israel is an apartheid state fails to make up for excluding Palestine from the Camp David accords.

alcoholicorn ,

Is it really inconceivable that someone could organically not like genocide?

Any American who acknowledges that every president for the last century has done things we hanged Nazis for at Nuremberg must have been tricked by outside forces?

alcoholicorn ,

lmao what? Life expectancy nearly doubled since the communists took over, and now they’re similar to OECD nations.

www.macrotrends.net/…/life-expectancy

But also the audacity of calling China “the kings of genocide”, while the whole world watches in horror while we facilitate a genocide in Palestine and beat the living shit out of anyone who protests it.

Every accusation a confession.
