Mary Ann Shadd Cary was the first woman to become a publisher in Canada. She arrived in the country as American slaves were escaping to freedom via the Underground Railroad and devoted herself to teaching the children of former slaves arriving in Canada.

She later returned to the United States and was active in the women's suffrage movement.

Cary died in Washington in 1893 at the age of 69.

🧵 1/3 I’ve been out of commission a couple days due to flu. Feeling better and heading to see family for a bit. Needed to get a couple of errands done. Gas. Meds. A bit of groceries. No biggie.

In many ways you listed we are alike. However, I did have to make that decision so as to protect my children and grandchildren from toxic role models. Sometimes a parent must demonstrate how important it is to make a stand for what is right, no matter how pain is involved. When faced with it, children do identify and understand hypocrisy.
