Hey.

I’m Dan. A 36 year old father of two who doesn’t have nearly as much time as he needs to do half the things he wishes he had the time to do.

Impeachment by Jon Meacham - Read this one last year and it was likely my favourite read of the year. It lays out the case against each of the three (at the time) Presidents to have been impeached (or in Nixon’s case, soon to be Impeached). Absolutely fascinating.

Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin - This one is more personal. It focuses on three Presidents, their careers, how they came to be where they were and how their ‘biggest’ moments came to define them.

That’s all I’ve read so far, although I’ve only been ‘interested’ in this as a subject for about three years. Hope it helps.

I’ve got a few recommendations regarding presidents.

Gimsons Presidents: Brief Lives from Washington to Trump - Each President get a few pages, and whilst it’s not as 'hard hitting as some of this list, it does have some very fun writing, and really nice art as well.

The Presidents by C-SPAN - They take the most recent C-SPAN Presidential poll and dedicate time to each president based on their ranking. A lot of it is transcribed from audio interviews, but it’s still a solid read if you’re looking to get a grip on these guys.

The Presidents: 250 Years of American Leadership (By Ian Dale) Another round up, but this is perhaps more… current than the C-SPAN book as it takes newly created essays written exclusively for this book.

The Complete Book of US Presidents - More of an encyclopaedia than anything. It’s massive, but it covers everything from First Lady’s to Inaugural speaches.

Could probably find a few more if you’re interested?

Agreed. It gets to the point where if anything, it’s inhibitive to growth because people just zip right on past it before ultimately unsubscribing.

Finished Viewpoint the other day. I’d say 3-4 hours total, which is perfect for where I am right now.

And last night I made some headway with Bloodborne, a game that genuinely makes me anxious like no other media property ever has.

I think one of their biggest concerns is that the majority of the work will be done by the AI and then a significantly smaller team of random writers will be hired on a very short term contract to merely check the work over and dot the t’s and cross the I’s.

Oneeightnine , to ukcasual in So... do anything good at the weekend then?
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Birthday party. Another. That’s the tenth since March. Nine of them on a Sunday. Which happens to be the one day of the weekend that my partner works. She doesn’t seem to mind parties. Funny that.

Also started and finished a little puzzle game called Viewfinder.

Started and completed ‘Viewfinder’ over the last few days. It’s a little puzzle game where you have to play around with a camera and toy with angles to solve puzzles. Little Portal, little Witness, and a lot of fun.

Iirc I had a similar issue with base game Control. I wanted to experience the story but the combat really rubbed me the wrong way at first and I ended up knocking it down pretty early.

SuperhotVR. BeatSabre.

Oneeightnine , to ukcasual in whats your family's wee inside jokes or names for things that other folk (or better - your kids) find weird and annoying?
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I was reading The Lord Of The Rings as an awkward 17 year old whilst on holiday with the family. We went for a walk together and I found a big stick and took it back to the lodge. I claimed it was…my staff.

So now whenever anyone in the family finds a (even remotely) large stick, I get a family group chat full of nothing but abuse and Micky taking.

Yay.

Oneeightnine , to gaming in What do you game on?
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I own everything, but I’ll be honest my preferred way to play right now is on my Steamdeck. Being able to play PS4 quality games on the sofa whilst the kids/partner has the TV is a game changer for me.

@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

I play an awful lot of games on easy mode now anyway, unless I’m going in specifically to learn the game (Fromsoft games for example). If I’m playing a random open world game or a FPS I’m gonna knock that difficulty down to make life a little easier.

Time. I’d rather not do this, but I get like maybe five hours a week to play. The days where I can sit down on weekends and just…game are long gone, and likely won’t return until the kids are much older.

Giantbomb did a frankly incredible series around Kerbal Space Program a few years ago. It starts off incredibly goofy and by the end it’s still incredibly goofy, but also deadly serious.
