I just discovered the superb Gladys Mitchell, a country house detective novelist from the same stable as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. Though probably less well-known. 'Speedy Death' is her first novel

I'm only a few pages in but already hooked. It's murder mystery with a decidedly Wodehousian tone of voice and a similar cast of vapid wastrels as characters. Her sleuth is the formidable Mrs Bradley. The prose breathes pure 1920s air.

@riggbeck @bookstodon Have you read any of Georgette Heyer’s detective novels? Similarly very Wodehousian.

Reading a lot of detective fiction and these stick in my mind as the best:

The Inugami Curse - Seiji Yokomizo

The Long Goodbye - Raymond Chandler

A Clubbable Woman - Reginald Hill

Rat King - Michael Dibdin

Also:

The Restless Republic - Anna Keay (a very good and readable history of the English interregnum)
