Nibodhika , to linux in Linux TVs

Android TVs are also Linux TVs, in fact I have a good degree of certainty that most smart TVs are Linux, developing a whole OS from scratch is hard, much easier to use one that already exists.

Nibodhika , to linux in What is the most secure linux os for torrenting and such?

TLS mitigates MITM, but doesn’t completely prevents it. A MITM can emit their own certificates, that’s not unheard of, although harder than regular attacks.

Nibodhika , to linux in What is the most secure linux os for torrenting and such?

Let me make an analogy. Your house is like your OS, your house can be very secure, or not at all, it can be very customisable or completely pre-made, it can be completely a black box where you never know how it’s wired or where are the pipes and for some reason the kitchen lights turn off the bathroom ones and it’s illegal to open the walls, or it can be an open plan where everyone can know how it’s wired and where the pipes go.

The internet is the post network, you can send letters to anyone in the world. Your local post office branch is your ISP, you send letters to them, and they redirect it to whoever you addressed them to.

HTTP is like writing letters in plain English and address them to the person you want. If your local post office wanted they can open the letter, read what you wrote, and know what you said and to who.

HTTPS is like writing a letter in a code/encryption only you and the person you’re sending the letter to know. Your local post office knows who you’re sending it to, but can’t know what you’re saying.

A VPN is like a friend who go you can send letters to asking him to send a letter to someone else. Now if the post office sees your letters they can’t know to who they’re actually addressed nor what they say.

Torrenting is like posting things to a bulletin board, except this is done through the post. The content of the bulletin board are public, so you can’t hide the information that you want to watch X movie, if you send the letter through the post they know that you’re sending it to the bulletin board, and even if it was encrypted they can read it, what’s more when someone sees the board and replies to you the post know what he’s replying to, so they know you’re getting the movie you asked for.

On this analogy, does it really matter how secure your house is? Not really. The only way you’re safe is by instead of posting it on the board yourself asking a friend (VPN) to post it for you and receive the responses and send them to you, and between you and your friend you have a code (HTTPS) so that the post office can’t read what you are talking about.

There are reasons why you would want to have a VPN outside torrenting, if you use public internet, e.g. coffee shops or shopping malls, you should be very careful, because on those networks someone can stand between you and who you’re trying to contact and pretend to be them and you would be giving your password and bank details to that person thinking you’re talking to the bank. This is called a man-in-the-middle attack, but if you’re sending those details to your friend for him to send to the bank you know your friend’s address so that’s harder to take, also your connection to him is encrypted, and your bank details are encrypted so that not even your friend can read them, so it’s extra secure.

Also a VPN is not that expensive, the one I use costs €49 a year, if you go monthly it’s €7, for the security they offer it’s a no brainer.

Nibodhika , to linux in Most of us hate Microsoft, and yet many of us use VSCode

Which goes to show that we don’t blindly hate Microsoft, and that it’s not that we refuse to use Windows because it’s made by them, but because it’s shit.

Nibodhika , to nostupidquestions in Is a scientific lifestyle even possible?

I’m not beating around the bush, that is the core of the scientific method, you have plenty of evidence, even if the majority of it is other people’s research. Apply the same to everything else (like you’re probably already doing anyways, since I doubt you have personally invented the computer you’re typing this on)

Nibodhika , to nostupidquestions in Is a scientific lifestyle even possible?

So do you think you don’t have enough evidence that jumping out of a skyscraper will kill you? Do you need to conduce experiments by yourself? Or do you trust on the scientific authorities for this?.

If you trust them for this, why not trust them for other things? And if you don’t why not jump of a skyscraper?

Nibodhika , to nostupidquestions in Is a scientific lifestyle even possible?

Yes, it is. Me and most people on the planet live a scientific lifestyle, the last time humans didn’t was known as the dark ages. Don’t believe me? Then why haven’t you jumped in front of a train or exiting skyscrapers through the window? The reason is the enormous amount of scientific evidence that tells you otherwise, and no matter how much unscientific people think they are they still follow th scientific method every day for all facets of their life without noticing, they just decide that this or that does not need the same amount of scrutiny that they put on their ability to survive a 100m fall.

Nibodhika , to linux in Cannot read files from SD card which works fine under windows

Not sure, but one of the commands there showed /dev/sdg1p1 which is a weird name used for subvolumes if I remember correctly.

Nibodhika , to linux in Cannot read files from SD card which works fine under windows

Which partition is the one automatically mounted? That sdcard seems weird, it has 4 partitions occupying the same space. Also I would try to mount all 4 partitions manually and check if one of them works.

Nibodhika , to linux_gaming in Why do you use Linux?

I was already a full time Linux user when steam came to Linux. Most games are closed source anyways, so I don’t see a problem in using a closed source game launcher. In fact as a general point I’m not against closed source, I use NVIDIA proprietary drivers since the performance is simply better, but I prefer open source software which is why my next GPU will be AMD. However the games are still closed source, so getting them from GoG, itch or Steam is very similar, but buying them on Steam gives money to Devs working on open source projects that improve game performance on Linux, so I’ll keep buying from them.

Nibodhika , to linux_gaming in Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

On Windows you have drives C, D, etc, on Linux everything is inside the root folder (i.e. /), and you can mount different partitions or even disks anywhere, so / can be the second partition on your M.2, /boot be the first partition formatted as vfat, /home be on an SSD and /home/nibodhika/hdd be an internal HDD. After you set it up (which you can do during most of the distros graphical installation) it will feel as if those are all just folders, but the important part is that if you ever format one of them the other remain intact. So for example if you have the setup I described above and you format and change your entire Linux distribution, that should only affect the M.2 disk, so the home and HDD are intact, which means that if you set the new distro to mount things in the same place you’ll have all of your configurations and media in place (all you need to do is reinstall the programs you use)

Nibodhika , to linux_gaming in Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

You’re probably right, I was in doubt and used the same spelling as OP, since english is my third language I don’t trust my spelling most of the time.

Nibodhika , to linux_gaming in Finally had enough of Windows. I'm packing up. I'm nervous!

The major tip I always give is: Linux is different from Windows, this means things are done differently and if you try to do things the windows way you’re going to have a bad time.

As for distro hoping forget about this, you’ll experience it but it shouldn’t start for a while, pick something you’re comfortable with (maybe the same you use on your server) and a DE that looks good to you (personally I like KDE Plasma, but this is a very personal choice, and I don’t even use KDE but I’m not going to recommend i3 for someone who’s just starting now). Distro hoping will start whenever you see something that picks your interest on a different distro, and you decide to give it a try, but that should only come into place after you’re comfortable with the one you’re using. But I always also recommend keeping /home in a different partition just so it’s easier to switch or reinstall the system if needed.

Like I said, almost 0%, there’s always a chance he’s the Phantom of the Library.

Nibodhika , to games in Larion Studios forum stores your passwords in unhashed plaintext.

First of all they wouldn’t know there’s nothing worthwhile until they got in. But most importantly if you’re using the same password for everything since 91 there’s around a 0% chance that password hasn’t been leaked. This means that a random person can have access to everything that you have that’s not 2fa protected without you even noticing. You said that no one tried to get into your things, how would you know? Most places don’t let you know when someone login successfully, and a lot of other places do so with an email which the attacker can quickly delete.

If you really use the same password for everything since a long while back anyone who knows your email address can get into anything yours, getting a hold of one of those password dumps is really easy, especially older ones.
