NATO had hoped the road to Sweden’s membership would be smoothed out before the alliance’s summit July 11-12 in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Sweden’s entry would be a highly symbolic moment and the latest indication of how Russia’s war is driving countries to join the alliance.

But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has resisted, with his government accusing Sweden of being too lenient toward groups that it says pose a security threat, including militant Kurdish organizations and people associated with a 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.

The Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia had launched a total of eight Iranian-made Shahed-136 attack drones and three cruise missiles at targets across the country overnight, all of which were destroyed. Russia has repeatedly launched overnight drone attacks on Kyiv since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Beginning Saturday, Australian physicians can prescribe doses of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, for PTSD. Psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms, can be given to people who have hard-to-treat depression. The country put the two drugs on the list of approved medicines by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Tracking sites are lagging behind a bit, but so far lemmy.world is attracting the majority of new users since the reddit API shutdown.

The other big instances like lemmy.ml and beehaw.org are super slow today even though they’re barely taking on new users. My hunch is people are scouting different lemmy instances and settling for lemmy.world because it’s the most stable at the moment.

Server costs and some instances (like beehaw.org) are particular about who they let in. That's why I just refer people to lemmy.world since it's the easiest instance to sign up with a lot of local content to draw in new users.

Agreed. The difficulty is in the initial discovery step. Early lemmy adopters will often refuse to recommend a specific instance to newcomers. But that confuses people. I know it confused the hell out of me.

The benefit of having an account on lemmy.world is the amount of content already available on the site. But once you understand how federation works, it doesn’t matter much because you can subscribe to communities on other instances using the same account.

I’m on lemmy.world partly because it’s run a team of experienced admins, so uptime has been great (once we’re past this reddit influx).

Yeah beehaw.org is the big exception to that statement. They’re probably the strictest instance out there, and the result is that beehaw content does not sync properly.

As long as there’s a vibrant community outside of reddit, it totally helps to break that reddit addiction. Ever since I joined Lemmy, I barely even bother with reddit anymore.

Scored myself a bidet during that TP shortage at the beginning of COVID lockdown and it’s been a game changer. Get one because your butt will especially thank you after a spicy Thai or Indian night. Spicy poo and mud butt? What are those?

I still use TP, but it’s now for drying off.
