Gosh the 1980s were an optimistic era:

“The most important thing to remember about a nuclear war is that it will be the end of the world. Nothing gets in the way of responsible post-nuclear attack planning like negative, unconstructive attitudes such as those found in literature like On the Beach. Yes, 130 million Americans might be dead, and another 32 million might be injured. But the remaining 61 million health survivors can rebuild the country and live long, productive lives in they use common sense and follow government guidelines”

@bojacobs @histodons "In the event of a nuclear apocalypse take your credit cards with you"

Would have thought one of the few good points of a nuclear apocalypse is that your debts went in the fireball

Does sci-fi shape the future? Tech billionaires from Bill Gates to Elon Musk have often talked about the impact of novels they read as teens, from Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" to Iain M. Banks' "Culture" series. Big Think's Namir Khaliq spoke to authors including Andy Weir, Lois McMaster Bujold and @pluralistic about how much impact they think science fiction has had, or can have.

@CultureDesk @pluralistic @bookstodon I don't Elon Musk has properly read any of those books, ESPECIALLY the Culture Novels.

That vision of the Future is one the transphobe Elon would hate.

Is being ‘woke’ a badge of honor?

Historically, the word was used as a warning to be aware of racial injustices.

@TheConversationUS @blackmastodon even in the London Mayoral elections this year, candidates are still whining about 'woke'

The majority of this fine city will ignore them, as we're exactly the sorts of people they whine about or fear.

When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become an audience, and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; -death is a clear possibility.

@EgyptianAphorist @bookstodon definitely describing the UK there. Trivial little island of failure.
