Let me hear your Booker Prize longlist opinions, @bookstodon — I’ve read five of the 13 and a few aren’t out in the US yet. My favorites so far are Wild Houses and Orbital.

@lunalein @bookstodon I've been watching BookTube speculation about this for weeks. I almost don't want to look now!

@lunalein @bookstodon Yes! I was really expecting Martyr! To be on there. I've not gotten to read anything that actually made the list yet! I'm on hold lists at my library for a bunch but our entire state (Wyoming) shares a single ebook lending library so I'm also still on hold lists for some of last year's long list lol

I'm trying to read This Is How You Lose The Time War, but I'm struggling to understand what is going on, and I'm not sure if it gets better. It feels like a dense read. I heard so much about it, but perhaps I'm too impatient?

@strathearnrose @dilmandila @bookstodon I was underwhelmed and didn't finish it. I wasn't really in the mood for it and other library patrons were waiting for it. Might try it again someday, but I like my fiction a lot weirder, mostly.

Since we are coming up on June, it seems like a good time to check in with everyone here on @bookstodon regarding favorite reads of 2024 so far. Whatcha got?

The Criminal series of graphic novels by Ed Brubaker (ten primary works)

James, Percival Everett

The Book of Love, Kelly Link

Poor Deer, Claire Oshetsky

Prequel, Rachel Maddow

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon This has been another great year so far but there are some standouts -

Cahokia Jazz, by Francis Spufford

Medgar and Myrlie, by Joy-Ann Reid

Womb City, by Tloto Tsamaase

Same Bed Different Dreams, by Ed Park

@lunalein @kimlockhartga @bookstodon It sure was! Great world building AND great noir. I'd read a sequel or two.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon That's a pretty good description. I've explained it as "conspiracy theory as storytelling" and usually wind up talking about Eco's Foucault's Pendulum 🤣

Revevger by Alistair Reynolds

The world is a strange mix of space-faring and Victorian, but not steampunk. The plot twists were actually pretty surprising and more macabre than I was expecting, even given the name of the book is Revenger. The book was creative, and it was delightful to read YA without a romance involved and to just see this young woman grow into who she needed to be. That woman is quite engaging and powerful.

@DejahEntendu @bookstodon The sequels maintain that standard and expand the milieu beautifully!

@cliffjones @bookstodon Milton Lumky might be my favorite PKD. I think it's certainly his weirdest that I've read, though not through any effect he intended http://kateofmind.blogspot.com/2013/08/philip-k-dicks-in-milton-lumky-territory.html?m=1
