In 1962, A Swedish translation of The Hobbit (Swedish: Bilbo. En hobbits äventyr) was published, illustrated by Tove Jansson. The illustrations were not particularly well received by fans of Tolkien, but loved by those who appreciate Jansson. Copies of the Swedish book go for more than $600 these days. But last year, Tiden norsk forlag published an existing Norwegian translation of The Hobbit (by Nils ivar Agøy, 1998) in the format of the Swedish edition, replete with Jansson’s illustrations. I picked up my copy this morning.

Can you participate in a thought experiment with me? The posts warning about fascism are good, but I'm wondering what you think fascism actually looks like. Give a thought, and list what it looks like. Don't just say "the end of democracy." List what the concrete changes will be and make it local. "In my town/city/county/state the following will happen......" Think about it before replying. Not just for .

Fascism arrives doing 'good' things for some people. Especially when they're white, don't pay close attention to politics and get a drip-feed of bigotry seeping into their heads from friends, family and coworkers every day.

They give food to the (white) homeless... "see, we're good people and not those villains you've been told we are"

They set up community programmes for (white) disaffected youth - camping and hiking trips... "see, we're good people and not those villains you've been told we are"

They set up patrols to suppress petty crime (in the white neighbourhoods)... "see, we're good people and not those villains you've been told we are"

All while they spread hate and lies about, harass, attack, abuse and demean the people of colour, the Jews, the Muslims, the non-hetero in the community.
