which launcher would you suggest and why?

so I finally got the motivation to install lineage os to my phone after thinking about it like year. and now that I finally modified this phone I started thinking about ricing this phone a bit. I’m looking for a launcher that isn’t too minimalistic and with a decent amount of customization. kinda like kde bit you know…...

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

AFWall+ to block internet connection to that among other apps is wonderful.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I must block all network access to Nova.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Yeah, I use AFWall+ and restrict granularly beyond just launcher.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

If I had AdAway (root mode, not VPN mode) I would switch back to GrapheneOS

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I’m afraid that won’t quite work for me due to needing my VPN on, and set for split tunneling.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I can use private DNS but I need the DNS records in my personally hosted VPN to access my other self hosted solutions. So my use case is niche.

Currently I run a rooted phone AdAway Wireguard AFWall+

I need apps split tunnel between my VPN and outside of it. Apps running through VPN need to have my DNS Where the other apps I still want ad-blocking

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

My damn overpriced copper missed EVGA 3090 is why I’m trapped in windows. I can’t wait to ditch it.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I use it with root, disabling it and reenabling it doesn’t require me to reboot my phone…

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I wonder I’d its because of the systemless hosts magisk module that allows that without reboot. Dunno, I dont have to reboot even with changes made to my AdAway

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

Are they recent builds, as in the project isn’t dead?

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I am on a beta, and I love it. However, I am also using AFWall+ to block internet access to that app completely.

Neo Launcher is the closest I have found to Nova, but it’s missing the alternate app launches

If I had the time, the motivation, and the knowledge id jump in to try to create an open source solution. I don’t know any Java (as far as Android development goes anyways) and I don’t know any Kotlin. So it’s safe to say id I did go down this rabbit hole it would be a long ways out.

If I find anything remotely similar, I’ll share with everyone.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I used it in the past. I really did like the idea of it, but I can’t see myself going back. And 30$ is steep, I’d rather donate to an open source project anyways.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I still use Nova, but I block Internet to it completely. Lawnchair I didn’t try because of lack of updates. And I’m trying to lean towards open source. Thanks for the suggestion

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

Haven’t investigated what data they may or may not be taking but they were acquired by Branch (novalauncher.com/branch) and with that being said, use your judgement to decide if a company like branch is one you’d want to have data of yours.

Branch is an analytics company, so I would argue that yes, yes they are obtaining your data.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I tried it once upon a time, and forget exactly why I didn’t stick with it

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

Reasonably safe I would imagine since it can’t phone home. Similar approach I took, but I’m using LineageOS and AFWall+ to explicitly block internet connectivity.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I used it for a while, but it wasn’t get as many frequent updates as I would have hoped. I get it straight from the GitHub with Obtainium

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I actually just started to learn kotlin, but maybe if I become proficient enough I’ll make the damn app myself.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

Awesome, thank you

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

I’d be interested in the bet, I just already use other messaging apps, and don’t want to get telegram just for Neo Launcher

if you run lineage or graphene on a pixel 6 or 7, what's your experience?

thinking about paying $500 for a pixel 6 to nuke it and install either lineage or graphene. Main reasons: security, I want to degoogle, hate bloatware, I want complete freedom to choose what apps I want on my device, smartphones are notoriously known for their short support cycles (to me 4 years is not enough)....

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Thank you for the suggestion. This keyboard seems great. Giving it a shot, though I think I am lost as to how to add glide typing. But I’ll read the github. Edit: Github had my answer.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

To staty: GrapheneOS devs chose the Pixel line because of the Tensor chip (to my knowledge)

I have used both LineageOS and GrapheneOS. I like both for very different reasons. Whichever option you choose should depends on your usecase/needs.

I liied the idea of GrapheneOS and the privacy/securiry features it has. However, there were thing’s I missed about LineageOS. I don’t “need” root access, but i have it with LineageOS. I have it mainly for AdAway and a handful of Magisk modules.

Your mileage may vary. I suggest giving both a try if you don’t specifically know your usecase/needs.

Both have separate specific use cases I would argue.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I struggle to understand why there are a select few people who refer to their Raspberry Pi’s as raspberries. They are Pi’s, or Raspberry Pi’s not raspberries. 🤣

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I can understand that preference. I think hearing my mom call them raspberries irked me enough that it ruined it for me.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

You didn’t do anything wrong, I just found it funny. Absolutely no hate thrown your way!

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

AdAway, AFWall+, A-GPS SUPL Replacer, Pixel Tensor Audio Decompressor, Wireguard Command line tools, Termux and chroot capabikities, App Manager, Pixel IMS, SDMaid automation, and a number of other controls on how my phone works.

Its not for everyone.

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

There are some programs I still use that are designed for Windows, but use cases are “niche” or at very least specialized:

  1. Guitar Pro 8 - Guitar Tab software
  2. Line 6 HX Edit - Helix Settings Editor
  3. Line 6 Powercab Edit - Amp Settings Editoe
  4. Line 6 Updater - Firmware Updater for Line 6 Products
  5. Steelseries GG - Configuration Software for Steelseries Peripherals
  6. Numerous VSTs and other Audio Plugins

These are just what I remember I use off the top of my head.

I do use Guitar Pro 8 with Wine, but the others won’t work through Wine. I did try to use the others with a Windows KVM through QEMU but I ultimately gave up and left one windows workstation because of my issues with my Nvidia RTX 3090.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

It’s not FOSS but I used Textra for years and it’s quite great. I don’t think it supports bubbles, but it’s worth checking out

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I won’t be going to theaters to see this movie. It feels forced, and the cast doesn’t inspire confidence that it’s going to be good.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I personally wouldn’t use Manjaro, especially if you plan to use anything from the AUR.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

How do you go about passing basic integrity? I thought Play Integrity Fix was dead.

AMD GPUs are cursed for me

Each time I try AMD graphics, something is fucked for me. Back with fglrx, fglrx just sucked, so I used Nvidia. Then I had an AMD right around when they finally had opensource drivers, but it was still buggy as hell. So I went with Nvidia again (first a GTX 790, then a GTX 1060). In the meantime I had a new work notebook where I...

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

And here I am with a 3090 having more issues than I have time for wishing I went with an AMD card. Sadly we both can see grass ain’t necessarily greener.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I’ve tried the open source drivers, the proprietary dkms variant, and standard proprietary drivers and all give me issues.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Wow, I can’t believe I missed your response. Sorry for such a late reply.

General instability, absolutely. Multi display issues. And seemingly no matter what I do Wayland on KDE is basically unusable for me.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Even with X11 I have had nothing but instability sadly.

I wanted to switch to Arch like I did for my laptop, but the cons outweighed the pros ultimately for me.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

NTFS will give you issues just like exfat. You can partition it as multiple partitions. 1 ntfs, 1 ext4. Or I personally for Linux have been using btrfs.

There is a btrfs driver for windows, but I don’t know much about ita use cases.

I made a mistake **RESOLVED**

last year when I went back to Arch from Manjaro, I made a critical error. I’m not sure if I was just tired when partitioning things off or what. but I made my root only 20GB instead of the 50 that I had intended. I know in a lot use cases that’ll be fine, but in mine, not so much. with steam compat taking up 1-2gb and...

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

There should be protocols and practices in place to stop our data from being owned and sold. Hence why I take the steps I do to help anonymize myself to a small degree. Ditch Facebook, ditch apple, ditch google, ditch Microsoft, ditch any provider that wants to claim your data that tou can to minimize this sort of behavior.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

As MajorHavoc said, there are ways. I do in fact use GrapheneOS, have access to a reasonably secure VPN, I use Firefox as well as Vanadium, within Firefox I use Ublock Origin and a few other tools. Some argue that having as many layers of “protection” is counterintuitive because it makes your fingerprint on the web more unique.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Before I even found Lemmy I did go down that rabbit hold. I love GrapheneOS

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

As someone wise once said to me, consider your threat model.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I look forward to trying yabridge, thank you for the link!

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I would highly recommend against Manjaro… While Manjaro is Arch based, I would recommend against using AUR packages with Manjaro even though it is Arch based. Getting packages from AUR often times ends up breaking Manjaro. Dependencies conflicting when using AUR with Manjaro is one of the biggest reasons I would avoid it.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

I tried Manjaro, but quickly switched back to Arch. I thought Manjaro would be a “Simplified Arch Experience with KDE” and man oh man, was I in for a “treat”

I do not recommend Manjaro over Arch, and I do not recommend Manjaro at all.

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

Heard good things, but after Manjaro, I decided I don’t need it simplified and that I’ll just learn!

What is a distro with updates of Arch but dependencies of Fedora?

I am currently using EndeavourOS, but am annoyed by the constant daily updates of 1GB and pacman not installing important dependencies automatically (ex: spell checker for document editor). I like the way Fedora works: you update whenever, important dependencies are downloaded automatically, and packages are recent-ish, but I...

Hellmo_Luciferrari ,

If you want something that “just works” don’t use a rolling release type distro or you’re going to have a bad time.

Hellmo_Luciferrari OP ,

What benefit would disabling it have for someone such as myself?
