It’s hard to beat a GPU in HEVC encoding performance. SoC:s have comparable performance to dGPU:s in that regard. A used zen/zen2 laptop might be a cheap and tiny workhorse for the purpose. I have a zen/vega10 matebook 2020 that does 1080p at around 2.5-3x real-time at high quality presets. No doubt it could do 4k at faster presets.

With the hardware in my arsenal I’ve found that AMD>Intel>nVidia, at least quality wise. VideoToolbox on Mac is down there with nVidia, and Apple silicon being pretty slow at it compared to software x265 on the same machine.

Haven’t heard anything, just from memory of my own testing. Looking back at my notes I see a 40-50% speed up with VideoToolbox compared to x265 on M1, but at a lot crappier quality.

I haven’t tested in quite a while, though. I wrote off doing encoding on the M1, as my AMD cards are a lot faster (and produce better results).

I usually use audacious for streaming audio, but with its playlist feature I’d be surprised if it didn’t remember the spot in a file.

We have all universally adopted Rich Communication Services, which is an open standard.

Well, except for Apple. They haven’t adopted it.

My T480 has a very worn internal battery, but still does 8-10 hours. Thanks to the powerbridge I can hotswap a second battery to run for another 7 hours.

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

Set up btrfs and timeshift. You never know when you need that big undo button.

What is your unbiased opinion on Manjaro?

I am a Linux noobie and have only used Mint for around six months now. While I have definitely learned a lot, I don’t have the time to always be doing crazy power user stuff and just want something that works out of the box. While I love Mint, I want to try out other decently easy to use distros as well, specifically not based...

I ran Manjaro for a couple of years as my daily driver before moving on to EndeavourOS. At this point I’ve probably spent an equal amount of time on both distros.

Their holding back of arch packages might sound like a good idea, but in reality not so much. Most of the time the same oopsies slip through with a bit of delay. Other times being out of sync with AUR causes additional issues. Arch stable is already stable, so holding back is just extra work with no gain in my book. Any additional testing effort would be better spent on Arch testing instead of doing the same work with delay.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

I rotate between a few computers. Everything is synced between them with syncthing and they all have automatic btrfs snapshots. So I have several physical points to roll back from.

For a worst case scenario everything is also synced offsite weekly to a pCloud share. I have a little script that mounts it with pcloudfs, encfs and then rsyncs any updates.

Most uncomplicated Printer that just works™?

Hey, sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask this (feel free to show me the way). I want to get myself a printer that can also scan. Main purpose is to not have endless sheets of paper laying around, but to scan Documents I recieve and then throwing them away so that I only have them digitally and can print stuff out only...

Look for PCL6 support.

You won’t even need a driver, because it already speaks a standard protocol.

Jolla is the successor to Nokia’s Maemo/Meego OS which was proper Linux. Jolla does have seamless Android emulation. They don’t do their own phones anymore, though.

Does anyone actually use Enlightenment?

One of the first wow-moments when I first installed linux (2003ish) was Enlightenment. I though it was very pretty, and quite different from the mainstream WMs. It was presented as a feature, not a bug, that development was slow: the people behind it wanted to take the time it took to get it right....

My Linux journey started on fvwm2, but after that I ran enlightenment for a good few years. Probably from 1999 to 2005, when I switched to blackbox/fluxbox.

Today I expect a DE to have great integration for managing wifi/bluetooth. It wasn’t needed 20 years ago, because computers didn’t have these fancy things. I haven’t really tried enlightenment recently, but it feels like that’s where it’s lacking today.

Need a tool for mirroring phone screen and audio to PC using USB

Please do not say, scrcpy. I will cry. Scrcpy doesn’t work for everyone and if it works now, something updates in my phone and the app stops working. Scrcpy got like 1000 issues. I spend hours figuring out the issue and still doesn’t work. Tested with all the available options i.e. resolutions, renderer and encoder. They...

I used vysor a while back. Played some star trek mobile from my computer and used it for screensharing my phone during app test sessions.

Using old Android phone as offline GPS

I have quite a few old Android phones sitting around. From Samsung S3s to a OnePlus 6. I’m interested in using one offline in my car for GPS, to avoid Google tracking. Anyone have good recommendations for a GPS app with directions that I can use offline. I’d like to be able to download the data for the entire U.S., that I...

How does Netflix and banking apps play with LineageOS?

My phone will get its last security update this month, so I’m thinking to jump ship.
