You should always start with the positive. How do you reinforce the intended design of the software. Verify all of the functionality of the soft works as intended. From UI buttons to display resolutions to the reason why the software was made.

Once you have built the skeleton of design you can begin to think about destructive testing. Software should always fail gracefully how would a user with lower profecinecy interact with it? What should happen if it is used in ways opposo g it’s design?

Affective test case design can take a fair bit of time depending the complexity of the software. A program installation app may only take an hour or two to write out but complex video games could be months of test case design. However this process doesn’t need to wait until the software has been built. It can begin fairly early in software design process. Depending on your develop menthodologies it could start once your pre-production phase has begun.
