Faceman2K23 , to selfhosted in Has anyone used n8n and Node Red and could compare them?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

The HA Nodered add-on works very well, make sure you install the Nodered companion from HACS if you want full functionality though, especially if you use the HA dashboard, it makes adding custom buttons and sensors that are backed with Nodered super easy.

I use it to manually implement controls and feedback for devices that have no official integration, or have poor integrations. You can do a lot with the simple modules and visual coding, but the real power comes with the function nodes where you can write your own code and make it as complex as you need.

Faceman2K23 , to selfhosted in What are your most used selfhosted services?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Plex, Komga (like kavita), nextcloud, and all the ancillary apps that go along with those, and Home Assistant.

Also playing with jellyfin alongside plex but it’s not quite there to changeover totally.

Faceman2K23 , (edited ) to technology in Samsung phones fake their moon shots
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Of course they do, no matter how good the physical camera and lenses get (and they have improved a lot in the last 10 years) you still cant fight physics, the size of the parts in a phone camera mean you are always working near, or well past the diffraction limit so there is a physical limit on the detail they can render, no matter how many megapixel you throw at it…

The average phone buyer doesn’t give a shit how much AI enhancement is going on in their photos, if on average their photos look better, they will buy it regardless of whether it’s “real” or not. honestly this isn’t really much different to any photo you take on a modern phone, they already use AI enhancement for texture recovery, sharpening, face and subject detection, “cosmetic smoothing”, etc… etc… etc…

They do say they are using AI enhancement so they aren’t really lying… at least not in the legal sense. People that actually want to take photos of the moon will still use real cameras.

Edit: oops lemmys doing the old posts on front page thing again lol.

yep Proxmox + VMs is the way I’m setting this new one up to replace a few PIs.

Should end up running HomeAssistant, a security dashboard (with HDMI output to my video distribution rig) and whatever horsepower is left will be on demand for a video compression server node running Fileflows or Unmanic. if I can get GVT-G working properly, otherwise the dashboard and video encoder will share a VM with the full gpu. I just want to play with GVT-G.

I just grabbed a Beelink S12 with N95 on amazon for pretty cheap with a coupon.

According to PassMark it is roughly equivalent in raw performance to the venerable old i7-2600 but with the better modern IGPU for video transcode tasks and it should be able to chug away at what I want it to do with less than 20w total system power.

Hopefully it means I can further downsize my main server to an i3 or pentium class CPU (went from dual Xeons, to a 6700k and looking to downsize further), and I’ll be able to decommission a couple of RPIs. to further clean up the rack.

There are also tons of Lenovo, Dell and HP mini PCs with 4th - 7th gen intel chips available on the used market for very little money, they are excellent homelab units too as they are reliable and spare parts are common on ebay if needed.

Faceman2K23 , to mildlyinfuriating in Getting banned after calling out a power hungry mod.
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I understand why they don’t want links to GFR, they are a a clickbaity source with little real content, but banning you for questioning it is a bit far, a simple explanation would suffice (“hey, sorry you’re upset, here’s why it was removed, have a nice day” with a polite explanation of their stance of GFR and others like them) and we would all just say “oh ok, fair enough”, you would edit your post to say it was all good just a misunderstanding and we would all move on.

I know that on /r/startrek that source was in the automods blacklist so I can understand removing it, but the ban was way out of line when a conversation was possible and very, very easily resolved.

I also got a PM from that particular mod which rubs me the wrong way. if they want to explain their stance, they need to do it in a post to the whole community so we can talk about it, this place is supposed to offer a new start for a startrek community forum and that should start with a conversation between the users and the mods on how we all want it to work, not bans and pms to anyone who questions them.

Faceman2K23 , to selfhosted in What's your backup strategy?
@Faceman2K23@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I back up everything to my home server… then I run out of money and cross my fingers that it doesn’t fail.

Honestly though my important data is backed up on a couple of places, including a cloud service. 90% of my data is replaceable, so the 10% is easy to keep safe.
