I didn't use the app on my Kindle tablet much, but I recently noticed the icon disappeared from my 'Books' folder.

I managed to track down this bit of

I've joined a reading challange on The Story Graph, that is a list of SFF sub genres.

There is no dead line, just read something in on e of the many sub genres and add it to the appropriate prompt.

This has prompted me to learn about the sub genres and how they may apply to the SFF books I read.

I'm not pedantic about it and I know one book can belong to more than one category and/or be difficult to pigeonhole.

I've recently read, The Saint of Bright Doors. I placed it under Mythic Fantasy, but also thought of placing it under urban Fantasy.

If you've read it, what do you think? Which prompt is more suitable for it?

2/5 @thestorygraph for A Finer End, book 7 in the Kincaid & James series by Deborah Crombie. My 61st book of 2024, it dragged my average down to under 4.1/5 , thanks to my zero tolerance for mysticism & mumbo-jumbo in mysteries. I skmmed through it 90 minutes, only reading to keep up with developments in Gemma & Duncan's lives. I hope the series leaves the woo-woo behind now. @bookstodon

Begins: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

My thoughts on the first book of my favorite series from childhood -- and the movie, too.

‘It’s totally unhinged’: is the book world turning against Goodreads? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/dec/18/goodreads-review-bombing

I hate Goodreads. The site is just a continuation of Amazon as a surveillance capitalist nightmare, one that's never updated. Bugs are rife.

I prefer Bookwyrm and The StoryGraph:

If someone, who isn’t an avid reader says, “This is one of the best books I’ve ever read…” (assuming they aren’t talking about something they read when they were 5)

Do you think:

Wow, this must be a phenomenal book, I must find it immediately.

OR

This is probably trash or close to it & if I see it, steer clear. @bookstodon

@Likewise @bookstodon Both of those seem like overly strong reactions to me.

Personally, I probably wouldn't make much of it because I know that my taste in books doesn't align with a lot of other people's. But I would ask what they liked about it, consider how well their reading preferences align with my own, and probably look it up on , and based on all that info if it sounds interesting I'll add it to my to-read list.

I would never take someone's positive review of a book to mean that it's trash, unless I know that their preferences are diametrically opposed to mine, and in that case it's not too likely I'd be listening to that person in the first place.

What a happy coincidence that pulled Las Vegas Noir from my TBR for me to read. I'm off to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks for work. The city - or at least the part we see the most - is constantly reinventing itself, so the represented in this book is very different from the one that exists now, 15 years after it was published.

It's been a while since I read a short story collection. These are fun. @bookstodon
