in - in 1587, perhaps the first female English novelist, Lady Mary Wroth (nee Sidney) was born. Learned, literary, and sophisticated, Mary was a favorite of Queen Anna of Denmark and danced in several of her masques. In addition to serving as a patron, she was friends with Ben Jonson and was noted for her writings by him and their contemporaries. She wrote Urania and was the first known woman in to have written a sonnet sequence.

1035 Sancho III, King of Navarre, died. He was first buried in San Salvador de Oña, but later moved to the Basilica of San Isidoro, where this tomb slab is located. @medievodons

1388 died John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville. He was buried at his own request in Durham Cathedral next to his first wife. He is still remembered today by this vandalised but partially restored tomb. @medievodons

1126 died Bertrand of Comminges, bishop of Comminges. Quickly began his veneration as a saint. In the 15th c., this mausuleum was built, which is also the high altar of the church of Notre-Dame de Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. @medievodons

(or tomorrow) 1080 Rudolf of Rheinfelden died. He had been elected king against Henry IV. In the battle of Höhenmölsen, his oath hand was cut off - a sign, he had initially sworn allegiance to Henry IV. @medievodons

in - in 1567, Catalina Micaela of was born in Madrid to Elisabeth of Valois and Philip II. She was likely namesake of her grandmother, Catherine de' Medici.
Well-educated, confident, and capable, Catalina Micaela was married to Charles Emmanuel of Savoy in 1585. Initially unpopular in Savoy (she was of foreign birth), Catalina Micaela earned loyalty by protecting Savoy from Spanish encroachment. She served as regent as well.

"Here lies the king don Sancho who was killed over Zamora" 1072, Sancho II of Castile and León was killed during the siege of the city of Zamora. His wooden coffin in the Monastery of San Salvador de Oña still bears witness to this. @medievodons
