@bookstodon Another really good graphic nonfiction book I've read recently, and recommend, is WE HEREBY REFUSE, regarding the Japanese-Americans forced into internment camps in WWII.

The story addresses a common victim-blaming response to the plight of others: "Why didn't they fight back?" It's almost always the wrong question, even though indeed, they did fight back. Victim-blaming is a pernicious permission structure, allowing us not to care about terrible events that happen to other people.

This is a story rarely heard. It needs to be heard, especially as some leaders are openly advocating for detention camps for those who look like they "might be here illegally."

I'm reading Kij Johnson's collection of speculative fiction, The Privilege of the Happy Ending (https://bookwyrm.social/book/1442804/s/the-privilege-of-the-happy-ending). So far each story is a surprise. Give it a shot if you're looking for something different (and there's quite a bit in this to try!)

@lgbtqbookstodon Chen Chen's new book of contemporary poetry encapsulates his experiences as a Queer Asian American. The poems are brilliant, and often as funny as they are clever. His talent is something no one can teach. Highly recommend: YOUR EMERGENCY CONTACT HAS EXPERIENCED AN EMERGENCY. @bookstodon

Book review # 24 for 2024 is Kristin Hannah's The Women. Wow! This was my first Hannah read! Wow! Powerful and a very, very, strong reminder of what Vietnam did to people, including women who served, in that terrible conflict. A strong character driven novel. ☕☕☕☕ review. @books @bookstodon @bookstodon ,

@bookstodon I am making a very long list of suggested book pairings, and I wondered if you all had any interest in them? These are read-alikes specifically in the sense of "If you liked this book, you 𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 also like this other book." I plan to alphabetize them by the titles of the first books in the pairings, so you can easily look for your favorites.

My criteria are my own (I even match up traditional books with graphic novels or short story collections) and it's super subjective, just by definition. But, you would be able to add your own book pairings as well. Books can be alike in (sub) genre, style, subject, thematic elements, even in ways that are not readily apparent.
