Based on what I witnessed this week, I have this to say: When a student asks if you can please reopen the assignment because she misunderstood your instructions and you say that you will open the assignment for 3 minutes and your face reveals that you think you’re being generous while at the same time you ignore the student swallowing hard so she won’t start crying in front of you, you are not a good educator. You are a cruel human being. @academicchatter

sarah madoka currie is not on mastodon but she is an excellent educator and I wanted to pass along the syllabus she just shared for her latest course:

For those in interested in , it is a great model of and inclusion. I find she does an excellent job balancing lots of information with good structure and organization.

A very important question:

"West Virginia already has a teacher shortage of 1,700 educators; what will happen in future years without graduate math, world language, arts, music, and more?"

Highly recommend this episode. "Assessment for learning" really speaks to me and also thoughts on the distinctions between inclusion and belonging and the importance of both. @academicchatter

What do we mean by Community Engaged Learning (CEL) at Utrecht University? How do we define CEL? Yesterday the CEL team held a retreat in our always-stunning buildings in the centre of Utrecht- photo is of the stained glass ceiling in the library. Highly inspirational once again to hear examples of CEL from across the UU, and discuss viewpoints for practical implementation.

Are courses with "Community Engaged Learning-like components" a good place to start, or do they water down educational outcomes too much? How to ensure that CEL efforts by educators are recognized and rewarded, and educators using CEL supported?

So many questions, such a bouquet of answers. How does your institute do this?

I believe that what’s going on at West Virginia University is a tragedy, but what if I’m the one who’s wrong, who has been wrong this whole time, that the democratic ideals I believe are meant to be infused into the experiences of education are for suckers who ultimately get steamrolled by a bunch of consultants?

You're not wrong. We have to keep fighting the good fight.

My swanky new office. That I can’t get into because I don’t have a key. And even if I could get in, there’s no desk. But, after a windowless existence for many years, it is nice to finally see some daylight. 😆 @academicchatter @histodons

You can't hit the breaks when you're going uphill.

After playing around with ChatGPT, I have decided to allow my history students to use AI. Working out ways to stop them from using it will only create more stress and work than it's worth. I have therefore included instructions in the syllabus about how they can and cannot use AI.

And so I set sail on uncharted waters towards the endless horizon, like generations of intrepid explorers before me.

Here is a statement from a West Virginia Linguistics professor whose entire department has been eliminated. It provides additional context to the Provost's decision to cancel 38 majors and the tenure and untenured faculty lines associated with them.
