🇩🇪 "Using an inductive approach, we asked 987 German citizens to describe what being German means for them. A latent class analysis of content-coded responses revealed four classes: a heritage-based identity class with a strong focus on language and culture (39%), an ideology-based identity class that revolves around democracy, welfare, freedom, and economy and safety (19%), a legal-formalistic identity class that is mostly concerned with the legal requirement for obtaining and holding citizenship of national identity (26%), and a trait-based identity class describing personality-traits that are supposed to be typical for Germans (16%)."

🇩🇪 "Our results reveal individual households, lasting several generations, that consisted of a high-status core family and unrelated low-status individuals; a social organization accompanied by patrilocality and female exogamy; and the stability of this system over 700 years."

"This article studies how northern European migrants adapted their collective strategies to Seville’s institutional framework in the last third of the sixteenth century and how these strategies shaped the emergence of the so-called Flemish and German nation."
@juergen_hubert@germany@folklore how is the truth trolling? This is a #racist insult by the way given the context I am more #german than you will ever be. The truth as shown can't be hidden. I have international degrees.

TFW a paragraph about #English names in a book on etymology puts a snippet of #German poetry you last read 30+ years ago into your head: "Es war einmal ein lattenzaun mit zwischenraum, hindurchzuschaun" (Bonus points for any who know why the poem always reminds me of Emo Philips😀) #AmReading#etymology#nonfiction#poetry#Deutsch#ebooks#Kobo@bookstodon

Mini-thread 🧵 Just wrapping up the #German Studies Association conference in beautiful Montreal (with less than beautiful weather)
I have to say: an overstuffed program with 32 (!) concurrent sessions, starting at 8 a.m. (!) is just idiotic: the laudable desire to include as many talks as possible (ppl need to give talks in order to get funding to travel) becomes counterproductive at some point. The fact that some panels on related topics were given the same time slot also makes no sense 😩 1/n
