It's Friday, which means . I'm currently about halfway through the audio for The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. The pace is a bit slow, but the narration is ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ and I'm enjoying it overall.

What's keeping everyone else occupied today? @bookstodon

i Howards End by E. M. Forster and he's like the meme "but he can hurt you in other ways":

The feudal ownership of land did bring dignity, whereas the modern ownership of movables is reducing us again to a nomadic horde. We are reverting to the civilization of luggage, and historians of the future will note how the middle classes accreted possessions without taking root in the earth, and may find in this the secret of their imaginative poverty.

ouch!

Sometimes, @bookstodon , the landscape of writing is so alien and hostile that you cannot see the book you were writing, the characters you were breathing life into, or the idea you began the entire journey with.

Then you start some theory, just talking outloud to a trusted sounding board (in this case my partner), and they politely listen for 15 minutes. They get the joy of being there when you hit upon the ideal turn, the twist, the character revelation that will work, that creates sense once again from your unearthly landscape, that makes it Okay to Stop Worrying, and proceed with your edits.

Then you over your work, and liking it, and able to plant credible hints throughout the writing that makes the newly discovered ending Just PerfectTM.

Love you all, thank you for the constant support on mastodon, even during my quiet, busy periods.

Moriarty.

Ps. "Stainless Steel Souls" is my current work, due out October 1st. Tag me for the presale.

i Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and it's soooo gooood! i usually listen to audiobooks before bed and i get sleepy after 15-30 mins. not with this book, i do not 😁 it's so packed with action and drama and dragons and danger and daggers pew pew pew (why does everything start on a D? 🤔)

i appreciate especially how cool the protagonist is with her sexuality and body, and she has flaws, how refreshing 😁

anyway, check it out, it's fun!

I don't read a lot of physical books anymore. Ebooks and audiobooks are just more convenient for me. But sometimes I'll make an exception, and if anyone deserves one, it's Raymond Chandler. Dude could write... truly a master of wordcraft. The Big Sleep has so much in it to savor and enjoy, and I'm loving the "hardboiled detective" vibe. @bookstodon

Reminder: I tagged the book I'm reading for easy access if others are reading ssmr book. I did NOT tag the author because that's just rude. It's not like she's going to have a conversation with me on why I disliked part X or wished there was more part Y. Obviously, if you loved the book, tell them. Gives them the warm fuzzies.

I've seen authors across SM who are distressed by this constant tagging. Just don't do it. There is no value or point.

i The Possessed by Elif Batuman now. i thought it was a non fiction about literature, but it turned out to be more of a memoir of an academic, and she got a sense of humour 😁
Elif's luggage was lost on her way to Yasnaya Polyana and she had to attend a Tolstoy conference in loungewear. it would be even funnier if she wore a hoodie instead of a shirt – hoodie is called "tolstovka" in russian, after, you guessed it, Tolstoy 🤓

So, there's a based on The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen coming!

My inner bookworm tells me to stay away from it to spare myself another "book to TV show" disappointment. But, one never knows :)

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart.

What a fucking BOOK holy heck.
I’ll need to find a hard copy of it so I can devour it again and again, and inevitably lend it out and lose it forever. But it’ll be WORTH IT.

Up there with Let Me Sing You Gentle Songs for beautiful stories that split and twist like braided rivers before spilling back into the ocean.
Might have a new top five book ay

Read Harder 2023 Task 4: Read a book that’s been challenged recently in your school district/library OR read one of the most-challenged/banned books of the year by a queer and/or BIPOC author

It's a long time since any books have been banned in Norway, so I went with one from USA: The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32075671-the-hate-u-give

I loved this book, even though it was heartbreaking, because it was so real and important.

I haven't read any manga before, so I chose My Brother's Husband by Gengoroh Tagame https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32337897-my-brother-s-husband-volume-1

This was just beautiful! 🎲6 "an unprecedented and heartbreaking look at the state of a largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture"

Black Sun, Rebecca Roanhorse won the Best Adult Novel in 2021. "An epic adventure inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue and forbidden magic."

Fascinating worldbuilding, I really loved it! I read the next book right away.
