I thought I was going to be working on my monograph and various academic tasks the whole day. But the vibe at work was very much "school's out!" and everyone was busy with practice for our Faculty games. Since I am on Team Karrom, I immediately started playing Karrom with another colleague. My first game in 41 years. But I was bested by younger colleague who was playing for the first time. No matter! I still managed to get my white discs in the pockets which is a miracle!

Attached is a picture of the Karrom board. Summary rules of the game in the alt text.

Grading research assignments today and found a few submissions that were eerily similar. Flagged them for plagiarism. Here I was thinking that this is old school copying another student's answers but it turns out they had used "AI tools" to help paraphrase their responses 😱 This was an assignment where we specifically wanted to hear their experiences and takeaways (and not some LLM's) from a field trip that we had organized for their research.

Thanks to this, we have to have a team meeting to discuss our AI usage policy for assignments 😒

for today

  1. No more grading for a few months! Yippee!!! Also I started formatting another article for submission. Hopefully tomorrow...
  2. Lamb shawarma for lunch.
  3. Tonight is night! (It was supposed to be last night but I was too knackered/distracted by cooking).

Grading all done and submitted. The rest of the week is for the edited SF book collection (with my supervisees), preparation for 4 more PhD proposal defenses and submission of other academic articles. Oh, and I think I have two more peer reviews to settle.

*Our actual academic break post grading purportedly happens between August-October. But I'm in the internal audit team so I don't know how much of a break I'll be getting.

Hi masto, I'm home. The event ran late and then I did a quick evening supervision (with a friend who is co-supervisor also attending), and then I hung out with said friend for a bit before sending her to the LRT (train) station. Event (postgraduate workshop/mixer) went well, everyone was happy and happy with the food. I'm tired but very pleased and proud of my supervisees.

If you think this is bad, you should have seen/heard me when I was trying to finish up my article on NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy. I seriously thought I was going to die, haha. Somehow I rallied.

And while it hasn't had many citations (just a couple, the last I checked), I now have a PhD student doing a whole dissertation because she was influenced by that article. I'll take that win.

So, onwards and upwards for THIS article.

Well, back to the grind of the article. 👋

Given how many articles I want to submit during this long academic semester break, you're going to hear me moaning about articles till October. Well, also the monograph at some point.

(despite the other tasks/things I have to do in this period like oh, be one of the coordinators for the audit process.)

Ever notice that when you have a desperate deadline your body acts up? First asthma, then migraine, then my tummy. Dying here, and trying to dig my way out of the theoretical oubliette I threw myself in.

I'm very very very sleepy but I'm going to blowdry my hair and then try to do some more work on the Suvinian section of this article. Yes I went there. Where angels fear to tread. What will my editor say. What will the Suvinians say.

Plans for today:

  1. A peer review that's due today 😭
  2. the article that's due on the 22nd
  3. Short story submission
  4. music practice
  5. Maaaybe grocery shopping so I can get some steps in and a nice drive while listening to Dr. Dog. Need to clear my head.

No cooking today for obvious reasons.

I'm kind of worried the editor who invited me for this special issue will not like this article as it's not quite what I wrote in the abstract (but when is it ever?) but I'm so committed to this new one and what I've done to the theoretical approach that I'm just sticking to it to the bitter end.

Hope many times is it possible to finish writing a paper? I think I'm up to four times on this particular one...

It's become demonstrably better each time, but I keep thinking of little things that would make it a bit better. Noting fundamental, just ways to present additional information.

I've got time to make those changes, but it's become something of a time sink, so I also want to be rid of it! How does everyone else decide when call declare it done?

Stop incentivising 'much-ness'.

We change institutionalised behaviour by changing incentives. We can't say there's a problem and continue to reward only researchers who publish humanly impossible publication targets.

Maybe funding councils and agencies should put a cap on how many papers published a year will be 'counted' for promotion, tenure, grant review.

Slow and modest science needs new incentives.
