in one of my final seminars we discussed #Balibar and the impact of #LeftPopulism on real politics.
turns out none (!) of my (European, Dutch) students had ever heard of either #Podemos or #SYRIZA. they knew #Fidesz and #PiS, but left populism was a primarily theoretical concept to them.
@clintunplugged@politicaltheory@philosophy I would argue that as your students didn’t know about left populism is the reason they needed your class. They were unaware of it probably because of the media bias. Podemos has frequently framed the need to expand the populism framework.
Luca Cinciripini from Istituto Affari Internazionali formulates recommendations "for the EU to enhance its role in global governance, leveraging its economic strength, diplomatic networks, and commitment to multilateralism to lead transformative efforts".

Caroline Böck and Matthias C. Kettemann from the University of Innsbruck discuss the challenges/opportunities that digitalization presents in post-pandemic Europe and address the advantages of integrating foresight studies into policy-making structures.
I understand that he happens to call himself a communist, but his definition of communism expressly excludes both authoritarian communism as well as (democratic) left communism and instead insists on his own idiosyncratic definition which doesn't really relate to any other political philosophy I am aware of
@clintunplugged@politicaltheory@philosophyI have been considering him leftist, but without much justification. If I reflect on why, his relationship with Verso and apparent engagement with leftist projects were early signals. But really it's because he made me feel more left, that he enriched how I understand certain leftist projects, without relation to whatever his belief system is, that I have been (mis)recognizing him as leftist.
@keenan@politicaltheory@philosophy perhaps I'm policing this boundary too much (obviously, even if Zizek is not actually a communist, it hardly follows that he is not actually a leftist)
still... it's an intrigueing question to me, because so much of his public persona seems to turn on being "a leftist, but...". If the leftist part of it actually falls away, the rest of it is not really that thought-provoking any more.
@clintunplugged@politicaltheory@philosophy i dont know much about him but i understand him to have a actual new perspective on communism. he accepts the failures of the historical applications and tries to come up with an upgraded version.
but i know hes quite controversial in his "conservatism". i think he is just tired of the leftist fighting among themselves, instead of actually being a real force again. if they could just concentrate on the core again, which for him is the class fight
Philipp Lausberg, Eric Maurice and Laura Rayner from the European Policy Centre review the EU’s response to the pandemic, examine current and future challenges, and make 12 recommendations to increase the resilience of the EU.
“The Freedom Archives contains over 12,000 hours of audio and video recordings as well as print materials dating primarily from the late-1960s to the mid-90s. These collections chronicle the progressive history of the Bay Area, the United States, and international movements for liberation and social justice.”

Vivien Schmidt examined whether emergency actions in the EU during the Covid19 emergency can be legitimated, and how, in three areas: a) lockdowns, border closures and movement restrictions; b) health policy; and c) fiscal rules.
“Arolsen Archives remembers the Nazi persecution, the Holocaust and the consequences of the crimes. The basis of this work are millions of documents about the victims of National Socialism.”
Another takeaway from the transnational mini-public held last month at the European Policy Centre in Brussels refers to the scarce accessibility to the same information across the EU. An important element to be tackled with the policy recommendations!
