You should also definitely consider battery life and how important each “upgrade” is. Windows supports a few extra games but isn’t optimized for a handheld like SteamOS. A better screen or more performance would be cool but not if it costs an hour of battery life.
One thing that ended up surprising me is how little I’ve cared about performance on the Deck. It’s kind of the nature of a handheld that you play games like Hades and not RDR2 or whatever. So, it ends up being less of a problem. Big, beautiful games tend to call for a big screen and a few hours whereas a portable is like, “I have 30 minutes to kill. I’ll play Tetris Effect.”
Players usually want a good story in their games. I can enjoy a good story too, but sometimes I just want to get going and do stuff without listening to several minutes of dialog in-between action....
Intel announced it agreed to a term sheet with ASUS to manufacture, sell and support the Next Unit of Compute (NUC) 10th to 13th generations systems product lines. The agreement will also see the development of future product lines.
Excellent. I absolutely love my Hades Canyon NUC as my daily driver PC. Used a i5 NUC as a Plex/Sonarr/Radarr/etc machine for a while too, great little units.
I’ve ended up with a number of machines on my network, and a need to name them all in a somewhat logical way. For several years I had them named after the planets, which worked well until the PCs for myself, my girlfriend, servers and Raspberry Pi’s quickly summed up to more than the eight planets. I’ve broadened it...
It might help if you give some examples of games you like. I’ve been playing Dead Cells and love it. It’s a side scrolling rouge like. Some others I would recommend are Metroid Dread, both of the Ori games, and Hades.
A lot of people will disagree but I did not care for BotW to the point that I didn’t bother with TotK. Not saying you won’t enjoy them but that’s a lot of money to spend on something you may not like. Nintendo does not do refunds after all.
I really enjoyed metroid dread and hollow knight. I also played a fair bit of hades and going under. Dredge is also really good. I wouldn’t worry too much about sales unless it’s a first party game. It’s really the first party games that don’t really go on sale often.

I’ve done a ton of testing trying to find PS2 , GameCube and PS3 era sports games. Most of the PS2 and GameCube stuff works just fine but I wanted to pass on what I’ve seen on PS3 and Switch. All of these games work perfect (IMO) right out of the box and no tinkering is required to get great video and audio. Feel free to add...
I started Hades recently and have been enjoying it a lot. I’m debating if I should pick up Sonic Frontiers, it’s been forever since I played a Sonic game.
I recently started playing GTAV again and sometimes I’ll get in my car and let the radio stations play while I do house stuff. Favorite stations are the 80s one with Kenny Loggins, and West Coast Classics and Rock Radio.
I should have guessed it would be Hades, but I'm really surprised to see Octopath up there instead of Slime Rancher, which somehow is way down there even though it feels way more fun. Since when has fun made something seem longer?
In general, without question:
• The Sims (played semi-religiously for almost a decade til the file became too big for my crappy laptop to risk adding any more GB to)
• Skyrim again (starting over just isn't the same once you've hit lvl 81, and I am grieving)
• Disgaea (bought 3 separate times because my sibling kept selling it to buy other things, and then a fourth when I got out on my own. Conservatively, I have beaten that game a minimum of 9 times. Would play again.)
I had a nice layout for a while that used Iframes to access all my services. Made things easier for my family they just went to the main domain and there was a menu that would take them to ll the services no back button needed. Iframes aren't really secure from my understanding tho.
Interesting about that page was I hade ChatGPT generate the HTML for it
I have more than 200 hours in this game. This is the review I posted in Steam when I had 50 hours:
Against the Storm brings novelty to gaming. It is an experience that you haven’t seen.
The initial premise in Against the Storm is similar to Frostpunk and Banished. At the core it is a RTS with focus on survival. Nothing that we have not seen before, but bear with me.
You are probably familiar with the countless roguelites we have seen in the last years. It does not matter if they are card based (Slay the Spire, Monster Train), bullet hells (Vampire Survivors and its million clones), 2D platformers (Dead Cells, Rogue Legacy) or hack and slash (Hades, Streets of Rogue).
All those games have the same common denominators. They bring RNG based rewards (with choices), have meta-progression and naturally, being roguelites, they revolve about the concept of doing “runs”.
As a whole, these games give us dopamine rushes, and therefore it is no wonder that we are being swarmed by developers adding roguelite features to their games.
I am not complaining, I enjoy my gaming dopamine rushes the same as I enjoy my morning coffee.
So what exactly the Against the Storm developers did? What is the novelty?
They took all those roguelite features and put them into their survival RTS; they did it in a way that was never done before, and the execution is flawless.
If you are someone that enjoy the first hours of RTS games; when you discover, explore, plan ahead, climb the technology tree; then this game will be paradise for you. You get to experience exactly that, time after time, in each run.
It helps immensely that Against the Storm have a neat UI and great QOL features. It is truly impressive and part of its winning formula.
In the negative side I find the meta-progression slow in comparison to the run length.
I know I am not playing optimal but my runs take hours and unlocking the good stuff is taking me forever.
To be fair the game encourages the player to raise the difficulty levels (Settler, Pioneer, Veteran, Viceroy and then 20 levels of Prestige) to get more resources so we get to unlock things faster.
I am currently playing Prestige 5 and the runs are getting harder but the meta-progression rewards feel minor in comparison. I could play in lower difficulties and still have fun, but then it will take me even longer to unlock everything.
I think this area of the game requires balance, it is too punishing for my taste. Nobody forces me to keep upping the difficulty but that is part of the appeal of a roguelite.
In any case this is something minor in a game that is just wonderful. Highly recommended, easily a 9/10.
I hope we will get more games like this one and more devs that are not afraid to try something new.
I’ve come to really appreciate when games aren’t merely graphically pretty, but that they also take great care with their use of camera angles and animation in general. I speak particularly of cutscenes and dialogue, but frankly this question applies to the entire game....

Yup, thinking back on it I think you nailed it. Especially that part about being more “free to just enjoy things”. I mean it usually almost goes without saying but I wish I could at least somehow do it - enjoy things I want to enjoy (not just games) without having any thoughts in the back of the back of my mind which are bogging me down. I am quite sure you are correct on this part. And the first part is quite true as well, I have x amount of games on my two PlayStations, y amount of games on GOG and z amount of games on Steam. Similar to your experience, back when I was playing FF9 I remember I only had 3-4 games in total, too. FF9, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo and Crash 2. So you are also quite right on this point. Right now even when I am playing a game, I am not fully concentrated on it because of that “mental tax of life” + I am always thinking about my catalogue of games I wanna play and even of games I should get and try, etc. So yes, perhaps I need to learn to relax :) Three games are coming this year which I am extra excited about - Baldur’s Gate 3, Hollow Knight 2 (hopefully!) and Hades 2. I will do my best to tackle just one at the time without any of these pressures and we’ll see how it goes. And even if I cannot really devote as much time to playing as I could back then, I will just take longer. Who says I need to finish a game in any amount of time? Thanks for “tiny therapy”, Crotaro! :) Maybe I’ll update you here later this year about this. Hopefully, my mind won’t be as weak as it was when I played Sekiro and Hollow Knight - after first trouble of getting something, I’ve tried once or twice to get it and then - immediately ran to internet. I will try to avoid this with these 3 games (and hopefully others).
P.S. I am now replaying FF9 on emulator and I remembered so many things even after 20 years :) so “technically” it’s not this “gameplay challenge” it was back then but still having an amazing time with it because now I am picking up things in story and dialogue that went over my 12 year old head.

I got sick of Hades. Everything that happened in the house before and after runs was great, it was just I shame I had to repeatedly slog through a run for half an hour to get new conversations. I came to the conclusion that roguelikes probably aren’t for me.
Has anyone tried one of these Steam Deck alternatives like ROG Ally, GPD, OneXPlayer etc? I'm kinda keen on this Ayaneo Geek 1S (www.indiegogo.com)
