Police say the body was discovered in the Western Downs on Tuesday night following bushfires in the Tara region, west of Brisbane.
On Wednesday morning there were three emergency evacuation warnings current for areas including Tara, Wieambilla, Millmerran Woods, Kogan, Goranba and Weranga.
Darrel and Toni Cross, who moved to Tara three months ago, said they had been given less than 10 minutes’ warning to flee their house at about 11pm on Monday night.
The Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said the government had extended contracts for more than a dozen aerial firefighters beyond the usual late November finish with a protracted fire season expected.
A fire that started last Tuesday at Belmore River, about 15km east of Kempsey, burned through nearly 3,000 hectares of bushland in the Hat Head national park before being brought under control.
Det Insp Peter O’Reilly said the situation was “incredibly dangerous” and warned that anyone found guilty of deliberately lighting a bushfire could face more than 20 years’ prison.
