First Brexit, now Orxit? Politicians on Scotland's Orkney Islands vote to explore more autonomy

Officials on the Orkney Islands have voted to explore ways of seeking more autonomy or even independence from neglectful U.K. governments

Journalists from across Britain and around the world tuned in remotely as Orkney Islands Council voted to study “alternative models of governance” for the archipelago, which has a population of 22,000.

Lorela ,

Honestly I love this idea for Orkney. If they actually managed to get a mandate from some sort of island referendum then good for them.

Sunak already commented on it saying the usual Better Together lines. I’m waiting for a proper Scottish Government response, will be extremely interesting to see the SNP position on this…

The residents know it’s havers. This is a play for more funding, a tourism punt, and a bit of fun more than a real prospect. But far north and island communities haven’t benefitted from devolution like the central belt has in Scotland since 1999

Brexit seems to have been so catastrophic for Scotland & Northern Ireland that I’m astonished independence hasn’t been even stronger there. However, I’m American and get my ideas of Scottish politics mostly from Charlie Stross so I’m certainly all sorts of biased.

wurzelgummidge ,

It’s been catastrophic for the whole country. Combined with Tory lies and corruption and that is where the UK is today. I’m not surprised Orkney would want to leave, the rest of Scotland wants to also
