My father introduced me to Orwell. Not just 1984 and Animal Farm like most people read if they read him at all, but lesser-known works too like my personal favorite of his, Coming Up for Air.

And if you never read any other Orwell, you should, at the very least, read his nonfiction essay “Shooting an Elephant.”

Anyway, this is an absolute crime, and one the vocally socialist Orwell would have protested himself.

The other reason I am bringing up my father is that he was an academic who wrote two annotations of H.G. Wells novels, something that would not have been possible if there wasn’t an archive of his papers at the University of Illinois which can be studied by anyone who wishes to visit their rare book and manuscript library. He discovered unpublished things which are now available for the public in general to read.

It would have been impossible if that archive had been in private hands.
