I think my first “wow, I really am a stupid American” moment came when I found out as a teenager that a man of Japanese descent was running Peru and trying to figure out how that was at all possible for a few minutes until my brain clicked and I said, “oh right. You can be ethnically Japanese but live in Peru.”
