I hope they also raise awareness for the Palestinians held in Israeli Prisons undergoing sexual abuse (men, women, and children. Hopefully the IDF doesn’t obstruct the UN investigation going forward too.

GENEVA (19 February 2024) – UN experts* today expressed alarm over credible allegations of egregious human rights violations to which Palestinian women and girls continue to be subjected in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Palestinian women and girls have reportedly been arbitrarily executed in Gaza, often together with family members, including their children, according to information received. “We are shocked by reports of the deliberate targeting and extrajudicial killing of Palestinian women and children in places where they sought refuge, or while fleeing. Some of them were reportedly holding white pieces of cloth when they were killed by the Israeli army or affiliated forces,” the experts said.

The experts expressed serious concern about the arbitrary detention of hundreds of Palestinian women and girls, including human rights defenders, journalists and humanitarian workers, in Gaza and the West Bank since 7 October. Many have reportedly been subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment, denied menstruation pads, food and medicine, and severely beaten. On at least one occasion, Palestinian women detained in Gaza were allegedly kept in a cage in the rain and cold, without food.

“We are particularly distressed by reports that Palestinian women and girls in detention have also been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault, such as being stripped naked and searched by male Israeli army officers. At least two female Palestinian detainees were reportedly raped while others were reportedly threatened with rape and sexual violence,” the experts said. They also noted that photos of female detainees in degrading circumstances were also reportedly taken by the Israeli army and uploaded online.

This is the problem. It’s nuanced.

Yeah, unfortunately R/SA are seemingly always present in war and conflict. This one is no different. The NYT article that used a bunch of biased reporters telling mostly lies swung the needle from “yes, Hamas used SA as a weapon on oct 7, and that’s wrong” to “that’s all a lie.”

The truth is, as I said, it is happening and has happened and will continue to happen in war. That’s true for Hamas, it’s true for the IDF, it’s true for every single combat scenario in wars since time immemorial.

We can’t ignore that it’s happening.

BUT.

That cannot color the entire conversation. Since the advent of the internet, we as people have become terrible at discussing or even acknowledging nuance. It’s not as the IDF and their many friendly outlets have tried to make it seem. But it’s also not completely a fabrication.

The thing is, the IDF is committing a goddamn genocide. That needs to always be where these conversations start and end. We can discuss all of the terrible, horrible, completely vile things that happen, and we should. But we cannot let them reframe the conversation with lies, half truths, or even less pertinent facts.

Israel doesn’t seem to really give a shit about their own hostages. They’re using them as emotional blackmail to get support for their genocide. They’ve shot their own hostages, carpet bombed areas where hostages are suspected of being held, and they even killed a not insignificant number of the 1,200 people that died on oct 7.

ISRAEL IS COMMITTING GENOCIDE.

They are leveling the Gaza Strip and strategically bombing civilian cultural centers and civilians, or just openly shooting them while they try to not starve. They are killing journalists. They are committing goddamn atrocities. They are the aggressor. And they are war criminals.

Hope they don’t get killed by the indiscriminate genocide being enacted by Israel.

Would be good for as many civilians as possible from both sides to get out as safe as possible. Unfortunately, it’s hard to maintain any kind of focus on this with children starving to death in Gaza and the genocide enacted by Israel in the area.
