Samsung disables customer phones remotely, holds data hostage until Mexican govern [Calls for boycott of devices doing this, Louis Rossmann, sources in vid description]

If this happened to me I would go out of my way to never purchase one of their products even if it was the last one in that category to exist. I would go without television if Samsung were the last television maker. I would dry my clothes with a blow dryer if Samsung were the last dryer maker. I would store my data on an abacus if Samsung were the last memory manufacturer.

I hope the Mexican people affected by this share my stubborn nature and send them a message

One time a coworker had a Samsung phone and it kept getting notifications about the net version of his phone. I decided then to never buy Samsung devices. Still happy about never having one of their devices.

Yes, the more we learn of companies…

Not possible to boycott all things, but awesome when we can when possible.

Especially when anti Right to Repair and anti consumer practices are pushed by these companies.

Did some googling and this looks to be an issue with the Mexican government enforcing regulation that was made stricter in 2021 rather than Samsung randomly being assholes

Did you watch the video? He mentions the Mexican regulations.

Public outlash or gov’t decided to side with citizens instead of companies, in this case.

However, the absolute blocking of terminal equipment under the way it is being carried out affects the rights of consumers and end-users. For these reasons, manufacturers are called to be part of a working group involving the various actors involved in order to identify measures and implement actions to address the challenges posed by the grey market, safeguarding the rights of consumers at all times.

PROFECO and the IFT, in compliance with and compliance with their regulatory frameworks, call on companies that have implemented blocking measures to suspend such actions immediately. This is with the aim of avoiding affectations to consumers and users until the appropriate measures and actions are analyzed that contribute to addressing the regulatory, commercial and legal challenges brought about by the grey market.

Samsung stopped punishing illegally imported Galaxy phones in Mexico, following the local govt’s order. Recently, the government of Mexico asked smartphone makers including Samsung to stop blocking products purchased through Gray markets.

Additionally, local media reports that the Mexican govt asked smartphone brands to form a working group in which the agencies, brands, and other partners can identify measures to face the challenges posed by the smartphone gray market while safeguarding the rights of consumers at all times.
