Off topic thought I had when I saw this, more on the system being the problem.

This made me think of an interview with Richard Wolff and Lex Fridman.

Richard tries to explain his views on Marxism and Communism, .

He mentions problems with academia, and how it is tied to the corporate world.

Around 1:41:00, gov’t/academics/corporations are all tied together in keeping the same system going.

To try and get back to topic, it may have to do with the kind of people needed to excel in competitive areas like a university/company/government.

Less on taking care of people and more on competing with each other to be the best…

Reminds me of sports and the fierce environment it produces. Some people adapt and become like them or they feel isolated.

You’ve forgotten to mention men

scarabic ,

Jesus fucking christ. We can talk about women for five minutes without it being a slight to men.

nothingness ,

fucking, fucking…

Zeth0s , (edited )

That’s also the main reason why men leave academic job. Let’s go guys! We’ve achieved gender parity on something! /s

(source: man who left academia. All system is toxic)

penix ,

To be fair women are weak and annoying and have no chill so imagine how shittily that must mesh with a bunch of fellas that just want to have fun and do knowledge.

It’s a lore-based economy.

There we go. Another potential abuser that should be kept as far away from Women as possible.

You gotta be in-fucking-sane to attempt the tenure track these days. So much more time & money in industry.

NielsBohron ,

Or go tenure-track in educational institutions rather than research institutions. I left my PhD program with an “all but dissertation” MS and immediately got a few adjunct jobs teaching at a small private university and a community college. A few years later, I wound up full-time with tenure at the CC, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision to leave research.

Bye ,

100%. It’s absolutely brutal right now. So glad I left academia for industry, they pay you more and you work less. Too bad I did two post docs first. Like, why the hell would I fight and claw for R01s when I could just like, NOT DO THAT.

total scam.

WarmSoda ,

That’s nice. CEO and top “management” are fine how it is.

HobbitFoot ,

But this isn’t business.

You can get toxic cultures outside of business.

agressivelyPassive ,

Actually, the problem is similar. The currency in academia isn’t revenue or profit, but publications, the incentive structure is pretty much the same, though.

HobbitFoot ,

Probably. College academia is toxic as fuck.
