How forests can cut carbon, restore ecosystems, and create jobs. A new analysis describes steps planners can take to make forests more effective “natural climate solutions.”

New research shows how reforestation and afforestation projects can be more effective in cutting carbon, restoring ecosystems, creating jobs, and providing other environmental and social benefits.

And yet we concentrate on stupid carbon capture and keep destroying forests. Look at Sweden.

Funders seeking a financial return on their initial investment are also concerned about the dependability of complex monitoring, reporting, and verification methods used to quantify atmospheric carbon removal, biodiversity gains, and other metrics of project performance.

This is a lot of the issue, and if comes up in mine reclamation all the time. Mines are mandated to reclaim, but what does ‘sucessful reclamation’ look like, and how do we measure it? How often? What if we dont end up where we wanted to, but have equivalent capability? And this is all before we even begin to consider CO2 removal

On top of this, uniform planting isn’t the answer.

We need to systemically change how we consider land use and it’s valuation before we can even hope to sequester enough carbon to make a difference. Right now, restoration projects like these compete with other land uses (housing, ag, etc).
