Their normal prey will over produce due to lack of preditors and then will starve due to lack of food and then next year the preditors normal pray won’t be in sufficient numbers to feed them causing them to starve as well causing a chain reaction.
Think of it like controlling the deer population, if we don’t keep their numbers in check they will over produce and all of them will starve.
