The authors did a great job of portraying the complex power dynamics between guards and prisoners and between the prisoners.
There were so many violent smartasses in one place, and they reminded me of real people I know who've been incarcerated.
The authors handled the rollercoaster of Cain and Rosalie's relationship really well, I love that they weren't afraid to commit to making a guard a real bastard. This book didn't seem like it was trying to make any particular point about the prison system, but it was definitely not a Pollyanna take. Abolition now!
